Iraqi Brigade Takes Control of Area, Future By Task Force Baghdad (Army News Service, 2/24/05)
Iraqi and Coalition Forces made history Feb. 21 when the 40th Iraqi National Guard brigade officially assumed control of their area of operation.You'd almost think they were actual human beings. The new brigade's area covers numerous spots in Baghdad, including Haifa Street, Ahdamiyah, Sheikh Malouf and Al Shaab. Coalition Forces will continue to advise the brigade, but the areas will be under complete Iraqi control.
Brig. Gen. Jaleel Khalaf Shwail, 40th Brigade commander, said he is proud to represent his country and his more than 2,800 soldiers.
"This is a historical event in the history of Iraq," he said. "It is our time to take the liberty and democracy (Coalition Forces) gave to us on a golden plate."
Iraqi forces also had "control" of Mosul and several other areas which we wound up having to reconquer. The question is will they actually fight the insurgents or turn a blind eye, as they've done time and again.

Since the elections, the ING, Police and Special Commandos have been standing up and holding their ground when attacked and putting a bigger hurt on the enemy then their getting back.
They also stepped up on election day.
Derek: Nothing you say is inconsistent with their being human beings.
Posted by: David Cohen at March 1, 2005 3:35 PMI haven't exactly seen them putting a bigger hurt on the enemy at all. They lost 125 men the other day in a suicide bombing attack. The attacks are still on-going, and the guerrillas are still getting at key targets, which tells me our Iraqi forces are still horribly compromised.

Any new readers ought to go back to the archives (March and April make good reading) and re-read Derek's criticisms and predictions. Then read oj's (among others). Less than a year later, you decide who has more credibility on this issue.
