IN THE KINGDOM OF THE MORALLY BLIND...:
Clinton Seeks Ratings on Children's Media (RAYMOND HERNANDEZ, 3/10/05, NY Times)
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday sharply criticized the sex and violence in video games and other entertainment directed at children, calling the prevalence of such images an epidemic.Mrs. Clinton, a Democrat from New York, also called on industry leaders to create a uniform ratings system that would warn parents about sex and violence in video games, television and other forms of entertainment that children might be exposed to. [...]
Later in the day, Mrs. Clinton joined a bipartisan group of senators - Joseph I. Lieberman, Democrat of Connecticut; Sam Brownback, Republican of Kansas; and Rick Santorum, Republican of Pennsylvania - on Capitol Hill to introduce legislation requiring the government to study the impact of media on the development of young children.
Her Democratic colleagues have set the bar awfully low, but Ms Clinton is having no trouble establishing herself as one of their most culturally conservative voices. Posted by Orrin Judd at March 10, 2005 7:53 AM
"mrs clinton, while you were in the white house, you were avidly courting hollywood for money, and the chance to mingle with the same people you now criticize. why would we believe that you would actually do anything to curb these same people, now ? will you promise publicly to refuse donations from companies that produce and promote this garbage ? why didn't you produce any legislation when you had the chance ?"
Posted by: cjm at March 10, 2005 12:30 PMIn addition to the comment made by the previous reader, I would add that there are already standardized systems of rating video games. It's called the ESRB rating system and can be found at ESRB.org. The thing that needs to be emphasized is the parent's role when these games and movies are being purchased.
On a side note, Mrs. Clinton is one of the last people on God's green earth that I would give the title "culturally conservative". She is simply a liberal doing what liberals do: lying about who they are.
Posted by: jbsaff at March 10, 2005 4:04 PMCan't allow parents to make decisions for their kids now can we? Why not just mandate that each video game be marketed with a free 60 second video at the point of sale where a parent can preview the game?

Posted by: oj at March 11, 2005 9:29 AMWhy not simply make parents understand that if their little snotnoses commit crimes that they will be jailed, and if they cause damage that the parents themselves will be financially responsible?
