McCartney sisters will join Bush in celebration (David Sharrock and Tim Reid, 3/08/05, Times of London)

THE sisters and the fiancée of a Catholic man said to have been murdered by the IRA will be fêted by President Bush in the White House on St Patrick’s Day as part of a strategy calculated by Washington to isolate Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein leader. [...]

The invitation is a powerful political message from Mr Bush, whose aides announced last week that for the first time since 1995, Sinn Fein and the other Irish parties will not be invited to the White House for St Patrick’s Day, the most important day in the Irish-American calendar.

Mr Adams and Martin McGuinness, named by the Irish Government as members of the Provisional IRA’s ruling army council, will be in the United States for the occasion, but officials in the Bush Administration have told The Times that Mr Bush no longer believes that either man can be trusted.

Gee, what was his first clue?

Put this man on Rushmore.

For a moron, Bush is brilliant, eh?

That's up to Intelligent Design.

Gerry gets to fill the not-so-coveted "Arafat Seat" in the Bush foreign policy stategery, now that Yassir's old place of honor has been vacant since mid-November. It will also be interesting to see if any other politicians come to Adams' defense/aid in the run-up to St. Patrick's Day which would be a bit like pulling out the reverse race card (non-swarthy terrorists are OK because they look more like the average guy down the street...)

That suggestion is sacrilegious towards Science. Go say three Hail Darwins.

Hail Darwin, full of grace
Help me evolve into the Master Race...

Or something like that.

On topic, this shunning of Gerry Adams and his ilk is going to be a big thumb in the eye to all those people who think the president only care about terrorists when they're sitting on oil (or in the way of a pipeline).

The Democrats will try to spin this into anti-Catholicism like they did with that fracas over the House Chaplain a few years back.

As for me, I'll be wearing either my orange tie or my orange shirt on March 17, as usual.

To the contrary--we're a day or two away from an expose in the Village Voice about how a secret White House team has found oil in Ireland and that's why they're doing this...

"Mr Adams and Martin McGuinness...will be in the United States for the occasion..."

Better yet have them detained at their port of entry, given a full body cavity search, and sent back on the next flight.

OJ --

Pots of gold at the end of the rainbows -- that's about the thought level of the Voice's conspiracy mindset ("Bush lied, leprechauns died!")

Meanwhile, Loyalist terrorism and crimes continue uninterrupted, ignored, and undenounced.

Actually, the President seemed pretty even handed if all Irish parties have gotten the boot, and there's no harm showing solidarity with the McCartney family. But there seems to be posters here that either don't know the Loyalists are the greater perpetrators of terror and crime in the Six Counties or don't mind terrorism as long as it wears orange instead of green.

Chris: I am the only person in the United States who is not pro Irish. I am not taking sides between the Orange and the Red. I support the Legitimate Government of Northern Ireland: that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II through her ministers and Parliment.

I doubt that Adams will be anywhere for St. Patrick's day now that he has started talking to the police.
