WITH OR AGAINST:
Soros Funded Stewart Defense (Byron York, 2/17/05, National Review)
Billionaire financier George Soros, whose opposition to President Bush's conduct of the war on terror caused him to pour millions of dollars into the effort to defeat the president, made a substantial donation to the defense fund for radical lawyer Lynne Stewart, who last week was found guilty of giving aid to Islamic terrorists.According to records filed with the Internal Revenue Service, Soros's foundation, the Open Society Institute, or OSI, gave $20,000 in September 2002 to the Lynne Stewart Defense Committee.

But don't expect anyone from the big media houses to actually ask Dean, or anyone else else in the Democratic Party hierarchy, what they think about their main 2004 benefactor being Ms. Stewart's legal defense fund sugar daddy.
Posted by: John at February 17, 2005 10:27 AMUsing Swift Boat rules (the Republican Party is reponsible for anything done by anybody who takes money from anyone the Republicans take money from), can't we now call Ms. Stewart a Democratic operative?

No. As defined by her conviction of aiding and abetting terrorists, she is a terrorist operative.

This is a case where it does matter what the definition of "is" is...But, are you really rebutting David's point?
Posted by: Moe from NC at February 17, 2005 12:09 PMLet's compromise; Stewart is a Democratic, terrorist operative. Does that work for you? Works for me. Should we ask Dr. Dean?
Posted by: Luciferous at February 17, 2005 12:41 PMSoros is compiling a consistent record of backing losers -- makes you wonder about the utility of his guiding principles, doesn't it?
Posted by: jd watson at February 17, 2005 4:13 PMTo be fair, it appears that when Stewart asked for more money, Soros's group turned her down.
But the list of her defense fund would make for very interesting reading in NY politics.
Posted by: jim hamlen at February 17, 2005 4:32 PMWow, a donation by a foundation 3 years ago proves that Soros himself approved of Stewart's statement that was only made public within the last two weeks or so?
When does $20,000 in a high profile court case become a "sugar daddy?" That pays for 5 minutes of pencil sharpening.
This is the same foundation that supported Democrat movements in the former Soviet Union that culimated in the Georgian Rose and Ukrainian Orange revolutions.
Get perspective.
Posted by: Chris Durnell at February 17, 2005 6:58 PMThe fact that Stewart's words just came out merely shows what the jury used as their basis of their guilty verdict. No one with any interest whatsoever in the case at the time of the original indictment could fail to understand her beliefs, since Lynn was never shy about telling them to others.
The shiek and his followers just weren't as adept at taking down two 110-story buildings as bin Laden's people turned out to be. Thay may have won him some sympathy in Stewart's eyes, but Sorors' people should have known who they were getting in bed with when they passed along the $20,000, and doing the right thing somewhere else in the world doesn't change that fact.
Posted by: John at February 17, 2005 8:21 PMChris,
Somebody made a decision to give $20,000 of Soros' money to this terrorist's defense. I doubt whether it was Soros, but the person who made the decision was hired by Soros or hired by someone hired by Soros. At some point, the buck stops with Soros.
He should say it was a mistake and that the person responsible has been dismissed.
Posted by: Bart at February 18, 2005 10:29 AMsoros didn't pay the 20 large for her defense, he paid it for a lap dance and a bit of the old in-and-out from la stewart (must have been like watching wart hogs mate)
Posted by: cjm at February 18, 2005 11:35 PMcjm,
I'd rather have a lap dance from Jimmy Stewart than from Lynne or Martha.
