WHERE MODERATE CANDIDACIES GO TO DIE:

Giuliani visit to South Carolina
stirs talk of ’08 presidential bid
(The Associated Press, Feb. 10, 2005)

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani didn’t want to talk politics during an appearance here Wednesday night. But his reticence did little to quiet the whispers that the visit was a way for him to test the political waters for a possible presidential run.

There is a simple way for Rudy to establish his credibility with social conservatives-- use his ability to get on all the TV networks to be perceived as leading the charge for the confirmation of Bush's first Supreme Court nominee. He hasn't really had to discuss the abortion issue in years, so he can easily modify his pro-choice views to the liking of pro-lifers on things like partial birth abortions, parental consent, etc.

Rudy just wanted some low country boil. Cut him some slack.

Rudy's marital history and living arrangements while mayor(he shared an apartment with 2 gay guys while Donna Hanover infested Gracie Mansion) will keep him from any breakthrough in the primaries.

Frankly, his even-temperedness, willingness to compromise, and mild manner would have combined to make him a perfect Secretary of State.

Bart:

He could get past that by a come-to-Jesus switch on abortion and gay rights.

oj,

Maybe, but it would never work in the general. The entire campaign of the Dems and their allies in the MSM would be 'FLIP-FLOP! FLIP-FLOP!' Even the voluble Giuliani wouldn't be able to get a word in edgewise.

The MSM only accepts the notion that someone could 'grow in office' when he agrees with them more frequently. If someone moves away from the received wisdom of the MSM, one is not 'growing in office', one is 'pandering' or 'selling out' or 'unprincipled.'

Bartr:

Yes, that would help him greatly, giving him innumerable opportunities to defend the Culture of Life against Democrats.
