BUT I LOVE YOU EVERY DAY!

V-Day ain't just cool anymore (Times Of India, February 13th, 2005)

"Red hearts, fluffy teddy bears, naked babies with bows and arrows—I'm going to be ill," moans Vinita Pandit, assistant director with a production house.

Valentine's Day is round the corner and the colour-coordinated hype and publicity are making her nauseous. And it's not even a symptom of her singledom. There's a growing breed of people who hate it more than the Shiv Sainiks do—but for entirely different reasons.

"Too cheesy, tacky, forced and hyped," 23-year-old Pandit's verdict, is suddenly not hers alone. "My sister would tilt her head to one side and coo, 'It's just because you aren't seeing someone that you don't like the 14th.' It was so annoying. I'd always want to say, 'No. It's just not cool. And you'd see that too if you straightened your head," says Suneet Verma (25), a Malad-based call centre employee.

Now engaged to be married, Verma says getting hitched hasn't changed a thing. "If my fiancee puts her head to one side and asks me what we're doing for 'V-Day', I'll just have to break it off," he says laughing.

Is this not the one day of the year when all men quietly ponder the wisdom of arranged marriage?

Truth of the matter is that love and marriage had nothing to do with each other until the 20th century.

I think Valentine's Day ruined when Hallmark and the school systems conspired to make elementary school students give each other cards on that day. For some reason, my old grammar school made us do that.

An even bigger scam is Sweetest Day.

Peter: I would think that arranged marriage would make it worse. At least my wife has no one to blame but herself.
