THEY JUST DON'T GET IT:

Democrats cautiously welcome Iraqi elections (AFP, 1/30/05)

Leading Democratic Party critics of US President George W. Bush's Iraq policy cautiously welcomed the successful staging of elections and distanced themselves from calls for the start of an immediate US troop withdrawal.

Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, who lost the November presidential election against Republican President George W. Bush, described the Iraqi elections as "significant" and "important" but said they should not be "overhyped."

Anyone wanna take a crack at explaining how there could be too much hype surrounding the transition from one of the most vile totalitarian regimes of modern times to a democracy?

Listening to Larry King tonight while driving home it was both hilarious and infuriating to hear the spin being put on the election. First Robin Wright of the Washington Post tells Larry that the election was actually a piece of cake and the real tough part will come later with the votes on the constitution and the presidental balloting later in the year.

Another guest on the show, Sen. John Kyl, slapped her down, and later on it was actually Robin providing a bit of reason when Rep. Jane Harmon came on to argue that not only can't we tell yet if this election was a good thing or not, but that since the Shia parties will be in the majority Iran is the big winner here, because they're going to all but dance to Tehran's tune. Ms. Wright noted that the Iraqi Shias weren't exactly boot-scootin' to Khomeni's number back in 1980 when the Iran-Iraq war broke out. However, both were rocks of stability compaired to Chris Matthews over on MSNBC, who was pretty much arguing that the ink used to designate who had cast ballots on Sunday pretty much marked all the voters in the Sunni Triangle for death from the terrorists over the next few days, since they'll be so easy to identify.

Combine the two women's talking points -- I don't even think Sen. Kennedy would touch Chris' hypothesis -- and you do get an idea about what you're going to hear over the next few days from the Democrats and many in the media, especially in the commentary leading up to the State of the Union address.
