One of the great advantages of being rich is that Americans don't have to make this trade-off. Down below, OJ posted an article by Monbiot complaining that we don't have the money to properly succor the tsunami victims because we're spending it on Iraq.

So far, we've pledged $350 million. That's generous and, so far as I can see, is adequate to the challenges now being faced, but in a $2 trillion budget, it's a rounding error.

Was there a question on the poll asking Canadians if they favored spending American taxpayers' money on tsunami releif efforts? If it's not, and given the supposed worldwide outrage on George W. Bush's "puny" initial response to the flood, I have a good idea what the response to that question would have been.
