READY OR NOT:

Palestinian Militants 'Ready for Cease-Fire' With Israel (VOA News, 22-January-2005)

Members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a key Palestinian militant group, say they are ready for a cease-fire with Israel.

The militants, who spoke with reporters in Gaza City Saturday, said they represent a local branch of the al-Aqsa group, not the entire faction, which operates dozens of armed squads of fighters. However, the announcement is seen as another signal that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is making progress in persuading armed groups to halt their attacks.

Of course they also say, they will not fire on Israeli's except in "occupied" areas, and they see all of Israel as occupied.

And they want ALL prisoners released......

So what have they really said?

That the war is over. Palestine for Palestinians. Israel for Israelis. Move on.

I'll believe it when Palestinian security forces are fighting and killing Hamas, Hizbolla (sp), and AlQ in Gaza and the West Bank.

If only it were that simple, Orrin.

I just spent Shabbat with relatives in Beitar Illit, a fast-growing community on the "West Bank", fifteen minutes drive from Jerusalem.

They are Braslower Chassidim; my cousin and his wife have seven children. In my two months in Israel, this family and the Chassidim in their congregation are the happiest and most cheerful people I have had the privilege to meet.

The thought of uprooting them is abhorrent to me.
