Michigan teen charged in girlfriend's miscarriage (The Associated Press, 1/4/2005)

A teenager accused of causing his girlfriend's miscarriage was charged Tuesday with a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Authorities say a roughly 6-month-old male fetus was delivered Oct. 4 after the 16-year-old mother allowed her boyfriend to hit her repeatedly in the abdomen with a baseball bat over the course of two weeks. The buried fetus was discovered in November.

I thought one of the reasons to legalize it was so that women could kill their babies in the safety of a clinic by a liscensed caregiver rather than resorting to desparate, barbaric "back alley" procedures.

Maybe I'm missing something here? The boyfriend is being charged with the crime, but the expectant female/girlfriend isn't?
She solicited the fetal murder and bears no responsibilty?
Actually, I believe her crime to be the greater one.
