The Hidden Passages in Bush’s Inaugural Address (Matthew Rothschild, 1/21/05, The Progressive)
Bush’s Inaugural Address contained many explicit references to God, but there were even more hidden allusions to the Bible that may have been lost to many in his audience, as they were to me, before I did some research. The subtle subtext of his speech carries with it a profoundly disturbing message about the separation of church and state in this country.
Here are a few of the hidden passages.
When Bush thanked the American people for granting him patience in “good measure,” he was echoing Luke 6:38, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure. . . .”
When Bush talked of the “ideals of justice and conduct that are the same yesterday, today, and forever,” he was echoing Hebrews 13:8, which says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
When Bush talked about the “untamed fire of freedom” in a passage that included the phrase “hope kindles hope,” he was echoing passages from Jeremiah. For instance, Jeremiah 17:27 says: “I will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem.” And Jeremiah 50:32 says: “I will kindle a fire in her towns that will consume all who are around her.”
There are many other passages in the Bible that have a raging fire in them. For instance, Isaiah 33:14: “The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: ‘Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?’ ”...
When he said "the," he was referring to "In the Beginning..." Posted by Orrin Judd at January 27, 2005 9:50 AM
I can see that I'm not the only one with the secret decoder ring.
Posted by: AllenS at January 27, 2005 9:53 AMDon't forget Gandalf, either - a servant of "the secret fire".
And just how would the left react if someone deconstructed Clinton's speeches and found references taken from Das Kapital, or The Little Red Book, or even Jonathan Kozol? After all, Hillary has been linked to Tikkun. And John Kerry was linked to a Stalinist (his campaign slogan).
Posted by: jim hamlen at January 27, 2005 9:56 AMHis research consisted of Google searches on Bible sites. A little fundamentalist of him to think that the Bible has all the answers, wouldn't you say?
Posted by: pj at January 27, 2005 10:56 AMExcellent reference to the secret decoder ring. Hidden biblical references are child's play, lots, probably way too many, biblical scholars around, what's amazing is your reference to the immortal Jean Shepherd.
I loved his late night radio programs and can still hear his voice, sardonic, but with an underlying chuckle. His book, "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" was my introduction to adult humor. Until then I made do with comic books.
Good to know his humor is still appreciated among you youngsters. We happened to catch "The Christmas Story' on TV last month. I had forgotten how well Shepherd oeuvre was captured. We laughed ourselves silly.
And if you play backwards Bush taking the Oath of Office, and you will hear such phrases as "Hail Satan!", "Seig Heil!" and "I buried Paul."
Posted by: Raoul Ortega at January 27, 2005 12:12 PMWow, Rothschild is a dolt. There is something to what he says, but it has much more to do with how much everyday idioms and cliches, e.g. "good measure," come out of the King James Bible, than any secret code. Pore through a Bush speech and you'll also find alot of secret messages to Shakespeare scholars. "Yesterday, today and forever" is a secret message to Beatles fans.
He goes on to say that this is "dangerous to democracy."!! Oh my stars, the President said someone was a "good samaritan" the other day. That's a biblical reference. Its a new Spanish Inquisition! What a maroon.
Posted by: Kevin Bowman at January 27, 2005 2:03 PMI like the idea of messages so secret and obscure that only a person who was never the intended recipient, like this Rothschild guy, can understand them.
Does this mean that centuries from now people will be intrepreting Bush's speeches the way today's pinheads look to Nostradamus for all the answers? Will academics abandon James Joyce and instead study Bush's subtle and witty wordplay?
Posted by: Raoul Ortega at January 27, 2005 5:11 PMNext up, Matthew from The Progressive will play records backwards to determine if Paul really is dead. Matthew Rothschild, dedicated to fearless, in-depth reporting in The Progressive tradition.
Posted by: LUCIFEROUS at January 27, 2005 8:57 PMWhat Rothschild does not reveal is that the speech was originally written in hebrew and then translated into english. When written in hebrew in the manner of a torah scroll, without points, and decoded using the methods of the Bible Code the speech reveals the complete plan for WWJD (World Wide Jewish Domination) by the IZC (International Zionist Conspiracy). This fact has only been revealed to members of the ZOG (Zionist Occupation Government) who received the hebrew scroll by secure courier.
Wow! It must be a Jewish plot! Bush opened his address saying, "on this day, prescribed by law and marked by ceremony, we celebrate..., and recall the deep commitments..." He also spoke of his determination to fulfill his oath. It sounds pretty religious to me. I must spend some time looking through Psalms and Proverbs tonight. I know that I can break the President's code.
You know the sad thing is that sombody will google my post above, take it seriously and cite it to prove the existence of his fantasies.
Posted by: Robert Schwartz at January 27, 2005 9:46 PMSee, I knew it! Robert, you say you're not serious, so you must be. I'll be sure to study my Biblia Hebreica, and I will break the code. Thanks.
Posted by: Dave W. at January 27, 2005 11:43 PMOn second thought, I'm going to bed!
What is it w/these wackos and their conspiracy theories and fixation w/gnostic messages?
Whilst surfing some liberal sites last summer I came across one person's site. He had a lengthy and through dissertation on how GWB is the Antichrist.
Posted by: Dave W. at January 27, 2005 11:57 PMThere are plenty of people on the (ahem) Right who think HRC is.
Posted by: ratbert at January 28, 2005 10:37 AMRatbert:
HRC is just hungering and thirsting for power, dominance and control, that's all. Tbhat doesn't make her the Antichrist, or even an evil person, for that matter. She's just a wretched sinner like the rest of us.
"BES URET TODR INKY OUR OVAL TIN" I agree w/you E.
