THIS IS THE WAY HISTORY ENDS....

Ukraine Negotiators Settle on Some Form of New Election (David Holley, December 1, 2004, LA Times)

Government and opposition leaders on Wednesday agreed to work for a rerun of a presidential election, moving closer toward ending a political crisis that for 10 days has brought this nation to a virtual standstill.

Details of a revote remained sketchy, but it appeared to hinge on anticipation that Ukraine's Supreme Court would soon render invalid the official results of the Nov. 21 presidential runoff, which put Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych ahead by a slim margin.

After several hours of mediation at the presidential residence, Yanukovych, outgoing President Leonid D. Kuchma , opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko and European foreign policy chief Javier Solana announced that they had reached a broad agreement to resolve the crisis peacefully with some form of repeat election.

Kuchma said "completion of the election of the president of Ukraine" would be based on pending action by the Supreme Court and parliament.

The court, which is hearing opposition allegations of election fraud, was not part of Wednesday's agreement. But Solana said it was "very unlikely" that judges would approve the disputed Central Election Commission tally.

Wednesday's deal meant the crisis would be solved "by voting," Solana said. The people of Ukraine "have shown their interest in free and fair elections, and this at the end of the day is what they're going to have," he said.

It might be too early for this thing to be said to have ended w/a whimper.

It is entirely possible if a revote doesn't result in a Yanukovych victory, Putin will invade, er a I mean send in the Russian military to protect ethnic Russians and to preserve the stability of the Ukrainian S.S.R., er a I mean The republic of Ukraine, if things don't go the way he wants them to go.

Wasn't Kuchma in Moscow today? I imagine Putin said, 'Comrade, if this useless revote takes place and Yanukovych loses, you WILL as me to send in Russian troops. Oh, and comrade, do not fail me again!'

CCCP FOREVER!

How long would that hold for? A couple months? It's over.
