THE FEW, THE PROUD, THE 98,000:

Census Bureau Spots New Trend (Keith Peters, Washington, 12/06/04, Citizen Link)

Stay-at-home parents are apparently the hot new demographic.

The dual-income family seems like the norm in America—but there may be a change coming.

The big news in a new U.S. Census Bureau report on stay-at-home parents is that an estimated 5.4 million moms and some 98,000 dads stay at home with their kids rather than go to work every day. Laurie Vande Griend of Focus on the Family said that's an encouraging sign.

(Oh how I'm missing a clever quip here from the Dr. Judd.)

Me and 97,999 others, I guess. Some trend.

As for me, I'm awaiting this month's release of the 2004 population estimates so that I can figure preliminary reapportionment changes. I looked at the 2003 data, and we had losses of 1 seat for Iowa and Ohio, and gains for Utah and Texas. PA, NY, MN, and MA are on the verge of losing seats to FL, CA, TX, and AZ as well, from the 2003 data.

In other words, it's likely that 2008 will mean a Republican could lose Ohio from the current list of states and still take the Presidency.

I had thought that they only do reapportionment every 10 years, following a census. Am I wrong?

Timothy-- of course you're right. It should be 2012, after the next Census. Got a little ahead of myself counting the winnings. ;)
