PEARL OF WISDOM:

Democrat dumps party for GOP (MONTE R. YOUNG, December 6, 2004, Newsday)

With Republicans controlling Oyster Bay politics, James Stefanich, the Democrat elected Receiver of Taxes, dumped his party today and joined the town's GOP majority.

At a news conference in Mineola, Stefanich, twice elected as a Democrat with three years left on his current four-year term as tax receiver, said "the Republican Party represents the right vision for the future of" of the town and "quite frankly, all of Nassau County."

The GOP did such a bang-up job in Nassau for the last 100 years, running the place into bankruptcy through a staggering level of corruption and taxation. My bet is that this goober switched parties for reasons having to do with patronage, not principle.

Bart: That's probably right. It is also one of the advantages of being a majority party. If you're looking for ideological purity, don't look at either the Reps or the Dems.
