Dayton's requests to go to Iraq are denied (Paul Sand, December 2, 2004, Mineaplois Star Tribune)

Sen. Mark Dayton wants to make a return trip to Iraq, but his request has been denied, the Minnesota Democrat said Wednesday.

Dayton speculated that his request was denied by the Senate Armed Services Committee because he has criticized President Bush's handling of the war and because he's up for reelection in 2006.

"Either one of those reasons is absolutely wrong, and unjust and unwarranted, and I regret very much the committee's decision," he said in a conference call with reporters.

The Iraqis are our allies--why would we include someone who opposed their liberation in an official delegation?

Not only that, but given his vitriolic, anti-military commentary during the month-long Abu Gareeb inquisition, who could guarantee his safety?

Senator "Shut My Office in DC Down Before the Election Because There's Going to Be a Terrorist Attack" Dayton is suddenly unafraid? I know my super-blue Kenwood neighbors will be very impressed!

The extravagant posturing about Abu Grab*ss by this rich kid Dayton was tough to suffer thru. Same though can be said about McCain, and others.

I think they ought to let him go. When the Three Stooges, Bonior, McDermott and Thompson, went to visit Saddam, it didn't work out so well for the Democrats. And Bonior got what about 3% in the Michigan gubernatorial primary afterwards.

All Dayton has to do is go to Iraq, criticize the troops, lie about what's going on, etc. Then, by the time he gets home, the thousands of soldiers' families in Minnesota have received e-mails from their loved ones calling Dayton a liar, a quisling, and so forth.

Who ya gonna believe Dayton or Sgt Kowalski from Duluth now on patrol in Mosul?

Bush won; he can't go: tough!

As the song goes: "I like it!"

Arrogant? You bet your ever lovin ....

Dayton has a big problem. He has publicly established an image as one who runs from threats. He is now viewed as cowardly or at best scared. He needs a trip to a war zone to look "tough". My only question is why he didn't prefer Afganistan or Bosnia. More cameras in Iraq I imagine, better Q factor. AS a last resort he could go to the DMZ and stare across the frontier at the'little leader'.

His best bet would be to set up a deal whereby St. Cloud and Fallujah become sister cities. He could go and cut the ribbon in Iraq.

Mark Dayton doesn't even know where St Cloud is. One takes highway 94 to Chicago, if one must drive; certainly not to St Cloud.
