I GO TO PIECES WHEN HE SNEEZES ON HIS TIE:

It's the F-Time Show With Chevy Chase (Richard Leiby, December 16, 2004, Washington Post)

Even certified Hollywood liberals were reeling after Chevy Chase's potty-mouthed Bush-bashing Tuesday night at the Kennedy Center, where the actor hosted an awards ceremony staged by People for the American Way.

For most of the evening, Chase was his usual comedic self, delivering lines like "This just in -- resignations in the upper echelon of the Bush administration. The Bush sisters have resigned and are being replaced by Paris and Nicky Hilton. Back for more news later."

After actors Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon delivered speeches accepting their Defender of Democracy awards, Chase took the stage a final time and unleashed a rant against President Bush that stunned the crowd. He deployed the four-letter word that got Vice President Cheney in hot water, using it as a noun. Chase called the prez a "dumb [expletive]." He also used it as an adjective, assuring the audience, "I'm no [expletive] clown either. . . . This guy started a jihad."

Chase also said: "This guy in office is an uneducated, real lying schmuck . . . and we still couldn't beat him with a bore like Kerry."

People for the American Way distanced itself yesterday from the actor's rant. "Chevy Chase's improvised remarks caught everyone off guard, and were inappropriate and offensive," Ralph Neas, the liberal advocacy group's president, said in a statement. "It was not what I would have said, and certainly not the language People for the American Way would ever use in discussing any president of the United States."

You'd think they'd be embarrassed just at the C-list hacks they had to invite.

"It was not what I would have said, and certainly not the language People for the American Way would ever use in discussing any president of the United States."

"He may be a moron, a chimpanzee, an Israeli puppet, a Halliburton zombie, the most hated man in the world, a national embarassment, and the worst tyrant ever to crawl across the surface of the earth leaving a trail of slime, but we'd never drop the f-bomb on him. We have too much respect for the institution of the presidency, you see."

Back in 1977, Chase proudly took credit for helping to elect Jimmy Carter president by claiming his impressions of Gerald Ford falling down repreatedly during his two years on "Saturday Night Live" helped make Ford into a national laughingstock. That claim in arguable, but just to give in to Chevy's hubris for the moment, it can also be argued that were it not for Carter's tremendous incompetence, Americans would have never gambled on electing former actor Ronald Reagan as president in 1980.

So you can argue the routine that launched Mr. Chase into fame and fortune beyond his talent also helped contribute to the ascendancy of Reaganism over the past quarter century in American politics. Wonder how many F-bombs you could get out of Chevy if you told him he was responsible for all of that?

What's pathetic is this: if it weren't for his left-wing shenanigans, how many of us would even have heard the name "Chevy Chase" in, what, at least the past five years? There may be no such thing as bad publicity, but in Chase's case, there doesn't seem to be any other kind available.

BTW: The article is superb. Susan Sarandon and Alec Baldwin received awards. Tom Daschle (D-Wounded Knee) went on after Chase. Ex-Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon was co-emcee. These people really don't get it--and let's all be thankful.

It sounds like a audition for the next edition of Hollywood Squares. If you are so down at the heels that you can't get on Hollywood Squares, I guess there's always Bowling for Dollars.

Where was Whoopi?

...Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon delivered speeches accepting their Defender of Democracy awards...

My sinister side hopes that these folks end up in an Ashkroftian re-reducation camp constructed from their own paranoid fantasies.
