In a surprise choice for Secretary of State, President George W. Bush today announced in the East Room of the White House that Tony Blair — Britain’s former Prime Minister — will become the new U.S. Secretary of State, succeeding Colin Powell. Below is the transcript of their joint press conference.

With Mr. Blair surviving his intraparty squabbles and headed towards the next election, Jose Maria Aznar makes more sense for now.
