THE GREAT BLUE NORTH (via John Resnick):

>Unhappy Democrats Need to Wait to Get Into Canada (David Ljunggren, 11/03/04, Reuters)

Canadian officials made clear on Wednesday that any U.S. citizens so fed up with Bush that they want to make a fresh start up north would have to stand in line like any other would-be immigrants -- a wait that can take up to a year.

"You just can't come into Canada and say 'I'm going to stay here'. In other words, there has to be an application. There has to be a reason why the person is coming to Canada," said immigration ministry spokeswoman Maria Iadinardi.

There are anywhere from 600,000 to a million Americans living in Canada, a country that leans more to the left than the United States and has traditionally favored the Democrats over the Republicans.

But recent statistics show a gradual decline in U.S. citizens coming to work in Canada, which has a creaking publicly funded healthcare system and relatively high levels of personal taxation.

You do have to wonder why more of these folks on the Left who favor high taxes, bad health care and social permissiveness don't just leave. Methinks they doth protest too much.

It's too bad we can't unload some 50 million or so of the jackasses on the Canadians.

Why don't they just sneak over the border illegally and live in the shadows of Canadian life? Good enough for poor brown Catholics but not for rich white liberals?

An ex-girlfriend of mine was so disgusted by Gulf War I that she decided to get up and move to Australia. I still keep in touch and gloated unashamedly over Howard's re-election and now over Bush's re-election.

She wanted higher taxes, higher services and a lower national profile than we in America, and she voted with her feet. Thus, I have respect for her and have told her that frequently. She took a significant pay cut and lives like 10,000 miles away from her family. Most liberals can't even deal with giving up cable TV for a week.

I was at Brad DeLong's blog, slack-jawed gaping at the vitriol on his recrimination/what-went-wrong thread. Even discounting for the post-election letdown and depression, the comments over there are a parody of the smarmy, clueless leftwing nutcases:

The nation is populated by mouth-breathing fundamentalist homophobes from the left-hand-side of the bell curve. We should boycott all red-state goods and services, and bring them to their knees. The message was fine, but the Republicans fought like the Vietcong, brutally and without remorse. Move more to the left and be honest about it. And so on.

Never once does it occur that the message is fundamentally flawed, and if it is suggested by well-meaning interlopers, the other commenters give him/her the bum's rush in a torrent of profanity.

Given that this outcome is so deeply unsatisfactory to them, why *don't* they emigrate? The secular European model being so appealing, and the prospects for success so limited here, why the hesitation. I genuinely want to know....

Most all of these folks are big on words, short on actions.

"It's too bad we can't unload some 50 million or so of the jackasses on the Canadians."

I think even the UN would find that an unconscionable act of war.

Anybody remember a political cartoon that was making the rounds in the late Sixties/early Seventies?

It was a counterculture couple (i.e. right off the flops of Hashburry) going over a list of what they were going to do today -- collect welfare check, collect unemployment check, collect food stamps, "borrow money" off his (rich) Mom & Dad, "borrow money" off her (rich) Mom & Dad -- concluding with "Meet at People's Park for Street Action Against the Fascist Pig Power Structure and the Rotten Stinking Establishment!"
