THE BIG ENCHILADA:

Bush: Will Reform Social Security System Now (Reuters, 11/04/04)

President Bush said on Thursday he planned to start work immediately on reforming America's ailing Social Security retirement system and predicted a long slog ahead.

"We will start on Social Security now. We will start bringing together those in Congress who agree with my assessment that we need to work together," he said in his first news conference after the bitterly contested presidential election.

Bush said reforming Social Security would be a priority during his second term and he predicted it would be very tough and costly.

Few presidents have ever understood politics better and Mr. Bush has told folks that he knows he has a very limited time to effect the rest of his revolution hbefore he starts "quacking."

Too late. Mark Halperin (famously of ABC) already has called him a lame duck.

Any more stupidity from Mr. Halperin (or his minions Stephanopoulus and Peter 'what are these moral values' Jennings), and it may be a race to see who has the longer tenure; Mr. Bush or Mr. Halperin.

He who quacks last, quacks best.
