The Democrats won't attack Clinton. He's their only real success story since FDR. No other Democrat has won two terms in the White House since Roosevelt.

They might not like the message -- they'll probably HATE the message -- but the messenger is the man who led them out of the wilderness. They'll swallow hard and try to smile.

Thing is, an attempt by the Democrats to present themselves as Clinton has suggested is probably useless. You can't fake sincerity. (Imagine if you could!)

Francis: He led them to the White House, but the party was far worse off in 2000 than in 1992. There were major structural flaws that would have cracked things open anyway, but he seems to have helped only himself...

But they see his wife as their path back to power, and see needs his fundraising/press schmoozing abilities. So the long knives won't come out until 2009 at the earliest, no matter how annoyed the left is at Bill's message.

I don't think Hill has any real chance at the presidency. She's just like MacArthur in the primaries in 44, 48 and 52 too divisive, too controversial and with too many past scandals ot get enough votes. But hey, if the Dems want to run her in '08, more power to them.

The Left is already attacking his people who are spreading the same message. Rahm Emanuel said essentially the same thing in the NY Times yesterday and the Left is already slamming him.

Not exactly, they need to work on their ideas. They have plenty of spin doctors and character assasins muckrakers gadflies, etc.

Clinton is interested in power rather than the Democratic party. His bloviating on the basic tenets of the Democratic Party are little help to a party whose plan is to gain power through fear, misinformation and demagoguery. If 40% percent of Democrats actually believe Michael Moore and Hollywood's interpretation of events the party's problems may be more serious than organization and strategy. Socialism is dead while it's American adherents, as represented by the Democratic Party, (which is run by Mr.Clinton through Terry McAuliffe)are too self-involved and delusional to realize it. Without change in the basic statist assumptions of the party, all they have left is fraud and deceit. The Clintons are ready and more than experienced.

BTW, what is left of the party without the booby hatch wing of academics,movie stars, the major media and race baiters? Not much.

While Hillary may still be too controversal for some, and her votes on the war on terror may annoy those on the left (though they would help her in any general election), the fact is that the left can go online all they want to collect pennies, nickels and dimes for Howard Dean, but the Clintons control the party's big fundraising apparatus. If the 527s' main benefactor, George Soros, decides he's in with Hill and Bill for 2008, it's over barring some foul up, like running and losing to Giuliani in the 2006 senatorial election. And if they see a potential run by Rudy for senate might be successful, she'll just skip the race and start her presidential bid a few months earlier.

So is Bill saying the Democrats need to convince Americans they "believe in faith" without a "theological message"?

You wonder whether he really had brain-bypass surgery.

They have an image problem because they have an identity problem. They don't know what they are and I doubt many democrats could articulate their idealogy other than in the negative such as michael moore or bashing the rich.

I think Bill Clinton understands this but doesn't care as he is only a political animal at his core. However, most of this huge, disenchanted going to Canada crowd is clueless to this reality including the media. So this guy Dolnick listens to clinton and comes away with "image" as the problem, - too funny.

Here in Cleveland (cuyahoga county), the turnout was huge and went to Kerry 4 to 1 or so. A Cleveland public school levy was on the ballot (huge one) and it was crushed. The pathectic and shocked school board leadership dejectedly diagnosed the problem as not sufficiently getting the message out of how this is really about the kids. These guys have a pension system that would choke a horse and bankrupt just about any institution not to mention their dismal results when it comes to providing education, but they think people are to dumb to see this and all they have is an image problem.
