SO REACTIONARY THEY'RE IN BED WITH THE SPOOKS?:

The Goss Purge (Mike Whitney, 11/17/04, The Progressive Trail )

According to a former senior CIA official, "The agency is being purged on instructions from the White House. Goss was given instructions ... to get rid of those soft leakers and liberal Democrats."

Make room for the "yes men"; the neoconservative pure-bloods who will keep their mouths shut even when the public is at risk. They know that government work under Bush is like joining a religion, where facts have to be modified to fit the prevailing theology. It's a matter of "I see what I believe, not I believe what I see". Those who can,t conform to the new regimen are shown the door. There's no room for dissent in the "us against them" paradigm.

The action at the CIA proves that the Bush administration accepts no blame for the tragedy in Iraq, the attacks of 9-11 or any of its other foreign policy blunders. It shows their resistance to any objective analysis that might upset their rigid dogma. Instead, information is tailored to their particular objectives, put through a doctrinal meat grinder, and molded to their specifications. This is how intelligence gathering deteriorates into institutionalized "brown-nosing".

The Goss purge has already netted a few high-ranking veterans, including Stephen R. Kappes, deputy director of clandestine services, the CIA's most powerful division, and John E. McLaughlin, a 32-year veteran of the intelligence division who served as acting CIA director before Goss was appointed. This shows that the new director puts allegiance over competence and fidelity over talent. It's a surefire way to hasten the slide towards ineptitude and cronyism.

All of the misgivings about the Goss appointment have been borne out in just a matter of weeks. He's already engaged in the partisan activity he promised to forgo. Now it's evident that that is why he was nominated. His one qualification for the job is his willingness to carry out a White House vendetta.

It's "Nacht der langen" (Night of the Long Knives) at the CIA with Goss wielding the presidential broadax.

Now there's a combo for your luncheon menu: the obligatory Nazi reference in an essay by the Left defending the CIA Directorate of Operations. At least now they'll stop whining about Allende, right?

"...the new director puts allegiance over competence and fidelity over talent."

This argument might have force if the agency had demonstrated any competence or talent.

The CIA is a secret agency. It's not supposed to be leaking to the press. Sheesh! What's so hard with the definition of "secret" for some people?

The Left wants a CIA made up of boobs, crooks and traitors. It helps keep the Seymour Hershes in business. It also works to America's detriment and that is pivotal to the Leftist agenda. The sight of Michael Moore's biological father, Teddy Kennedy, bloviating on the Senate floor in defense of the CIA apparat will be a vision for the ages.

If the CIA were competent, honest, and loyal, 9/11 would not have happened. It is precisely their botching of evidence that was all over the place, as Al-Qaeda exhibits all the subtlety of a Class 5 hurricane, as well as proof supplied by the Israelis and others, which allowed thousands of Americans to be killed.

The CIA has likewise failed miserably in its attempts to infiltrate terrorist gangs in any serious way, thus Osama is probably lying on a beach in Punta del Este(it is the season) right about now, rather than being placed in a wooden cell at Ground Zero for the survivors of that tragedy to take their revenge.

The CIA's record on counterintelligence is embarassing, Aldrich Ames is only the tip of the iceberg.

About the only things the CIA ever did accomplish was helping the Vatican smuggle Nazis out of Eastern Europe and helping criminals smuggle drugs into America.

I'm with the late Pat Moynihan, end it don't mend it.

I'm just waiting for the article that says the Chruch Commission fixed everything that was wrong about the CIA and now the Bush people are fixing to mess everything up again. Of course to do that you have to shove Sept. 11 right down the memory hole, along with everything Moynihan said about the CIA's analytic errors on the strength of the Soviet Union in the 1980s. But as the posted essay shows, this will be a piece of cake for those on the left who hate GWB enough to alter any reality.

Saw at another site where there were a bunch of qoutes about how the President was cleaning house at CIA, State, etc. to get his people in place to enforce his agenda. The blogger then pointed out that all the qoutes were from 1993 when Clinton took over after Bush I and the papers didn't seem to have a problem with the housecleaning then.

"It's a surefire way to hasten the slide towards ineptitude and cronyism."

How can you slide towards it when you are already there?

Bingo.

I recall that Edwards stated at his party's convention that we shouldn't have had to wait 3 yrs for intel reform. He should be happy that Goss is implementing his campaign promise.

Interesting that the blind quoted CIA guy knows German. Perhaps his replacement will know some Arabic. Of course, Mohammed Atta knew German too, but we did not bother to monitor the activity of his ilk in Eurabian universities.
