Bush Envoy Calls on Israel to Release Jailed Palestinian Leader (Kareem Fahim, November 12th, 2004, Village Voice)

During an interview with host Larry King on CNN last night, James. A Baker, the former U.S. secretary of state, who currently serves as the Bush administration's special envoy on Iraqi debt, called on the Israeli government to release Marwan Barghouti, the jailed Palestinian leader who is serving five life sentences in an Israeli jail for ordering attacks against Israel.

This is all orchestrated so beautifully, even down to having the American who Jews hate most be the one to appear to be applying the pressure on Ariel Sharon to release the guy who the Israelis hand-picked to be the next leader of Palestine. It's true genius.

Let Barghouti out under one condition: he has to give up Imad Mugniyah (supposedly the most dangerous terrorist, starting with the hijacking of the TWA airliner in Athens).

That should keep him in somebody's pocket for a long time.

He will probably promise to crack down on terrorism with the same dedication as Arafat did. What's next? Have Al Zarqawi run in the Iraqi elections as the most legitimate representative of the Sunnis?
Israel should continue to target the leaders of all terrorist groups who do not forsake violence. Sooner or later one of those groups will take the bait of status, heaps of foreign aid and the cessation of Israeli strikes.

The Israelis should take Barghouti out and chop his head off live on al-Jazeera.

Polk got Santa Anna back to Mexico to be its strongeman and make peace and got a double-cross for his efforts in the Mexican War. The Kaiser sent Lenin back to Russia from exile and we know how well that worked out. Let's just have Marwan complete his sentences. If Baker wants to free some killer let him do some pro bono work for Mumia.

Yes, Mr. Judd sounds remarkably like so many Kerry supporters - "once he's President, he'll grow in to the role".

Sharon did.

Nothing Sharon has done is a surprise to anyone who knows anything about him. He is not terribly religious, and he is a military man. Thus, he analyzes the situation in Judea, Samaria and Gaza from a military perspective.

While personally I would have preferred the forced expulsion of all the Muslim scum from pre-1967 Israel, and the territories acquired in the Six Day War, I recognize that it is not in the world of the possible. Political exigencies simply require another choice.

Gaza and most of the territory acquired in 1967 simply has no military value to Israel and can be jettisoned without cost. The exceptions are places like Hebron, where Avraham is buried, or Rachel's tomb or Masada. Sharon is making his decision, correctly, on a military basis. His intent is to create a Fortress Israel and seal the borders until the Muslims decide to rejoin the human race.

The overseer of Shattila and Sabra can give the Palestinians a state. Barghouti can accept it.
