YOU CAN TAKE THE CABANA BOY OFF THE SOCCER PITCH...:
Extreme makeover: John Kerry a `guy's guy': Senator's hunting trip latest salvo in battle for voters: Campaign tries to emulate Bush's macho persona (TIM HARPER, 10/22/04, Toronto Star)
The chiselling, polishing and buffing of John Kerry's image has been under way for almost two months, but yesterday the millionaire windsurfer formally morphed into the baseball-loving, goose-hunting, "guy's guy."A meticulous late-campaign overhaul appeared complete.
First, there was the Massachusetts senator, feet up on the coffee table, munching popcorn and holding a beer as he watched his beloved Boston Red Sox pull off a miracle on the diamond, beating the despised New York Yankees for the American League pennant after falling three games behind.
Unless that popcorn was drenched in sweet sticky caramel and there was a cheap trinket in the box he still don't get it. Posted by Orrin Judd at October 22, 2004 12:58 PM
Despite this puff piece's assertions, the common reaction to Kerry's goose hunt was that it was as fake as a 3 dollar bill - even the liberal pundits and bloggers admitted this. Maybe redoing your image back in June might have worked but not 13 days before the election.
And "beloved Red Sox"? - the guy couldn't name a current player and recently said it was more important for him to win the White House than the Red Sox win the World Series.
Posted by: AWW at October 22, 2004 1:04 PMHow long before he shows up somewhere wearing a Red Sox baseball hat?
Posted by: AllenS at October 22, 2004 1:09 PMHis campaign staff no doubt has already set up a 60-foot-6 throwing space in Kerry's campaign plane to try and improve on his last attempt to throw out a first pitch at Fenway Park.
Posted by: John at October 22, 2004 1:28 PMNotice that article says Kerry was "holding" a beer, not DRINKING a beer.
Apparently he's famous already in Mass. for showing up at sports bars in election years, sitting w/ a beer, untouched, in front of him, later to be dumped out in the mens room.
Posted by: Jim in Chicago at October 22, 2004 1:56 PMI love Hugh Hewitt's comment yesterday on the goose hunt: "How do you ask a goose to be the last goose to die for a mistake?"
Posted by: Mike Morley at October 22, 2004 2:00 PMOf course beer gets dumped out in the mens room. But for most of us, it passes through the mouth, gullet and bladder along the way.
Posted by: Raoul Ortega at October 22, 2004 2:02 PMmmmmmm, beer.
Posted by: homer at October 22, 2004 2:09 PMOk, you guys talked me into it. I'm going to have a beer right now.
Posted by: AllenS at October 22, 2004 2:44 PMIs he gonna take the goose home and make goose liver pate for Theresa out of it? If not, why not?
Posted by: Mike Morley at October 22, 2004 3:04 PMMike,
Not if he wants to win California. They just passed a law illegalizing the sale and manufacture of foie gras, on animal cruelty grounds.
There is an expected exodus of classically-trained chefs, mostly to Vegas.
Posted by: Bart at October 22, 2004 3:52 PM"Guy's Guy?" When the Senator shoots, skins, quarters and packs out a bull elk, I might give him a chance for a second opinion in this arena. But goose hunting? PLEASE.
Posted by: John Resnick at October 22, 2004 4:14 PMIf Californians really want to reduce animal cruelty, it would affect far more animals if they mandated that only free range beef could be sold in Cali.
It would also double the price of beef, but as Orrin notes further up the blog, morality should trump "realism".
Posted by: Michael Herdegen at October 22, 2004 6:05 PMMichael,
If they ban foie gras, can a ban on kosher slaughtering be far behind?
