WARNING: SELF-REFERENTIAL PROUD PAPA STORY
My eleven year old just looked up from his homework and asked how to spell "Hitler."
I asked why.
"We're supposed to give an example of cause and effect, and I want to write, 'Because people thought that Hitler wasn't a threat, he became a threat.'"
I'm kvelling.
Posted by David Cohen at October 21, 2004 7:46 PMAtta Boy!! (under the circumstances, we'll stay the self-reference rule, David)
Posted by: John Resnick at October 21, 2004 7:55 PMNicely done. Already surpasses some large fraction of the First-World adults.

Our next Secretary of State, we hope.
If not now, let's give him 45 years. Girls, baseball, other pursuits first.

Posted by: SteveMG at October 21, 2004 9:00 PMThat tops my proud pappa story.
At 11, he was assigned an essay to "define & discuss an unjust law.
In ultra-liberal Oak Park IL (the first town in nation to ban handgun ownership), he wrote about how unjust it was to "Ban concealed carry of fire arms."
Perhaps the republic is safe.
Posted by: BB at October 21, 2004 11:30 PMTo show you how bad things have gotten, when I read the part about him asking how to spell "Hitler" I immediately thought he had probably gotten some writing assignment from school asking students to compare the Dolpher to our current president.
Posted by: John at October 21, 2004 11:44 PMSo when are we going to be treated to his first posts on Darwin and whether World War 11 was necessary?
Posted by: Peter B at October 22, 2004 4:26 AMMmm...as we are boasting paternally on this thread...
I told my ten year old son last week that he had done his mother a big favour. "Why", he asked. We moved into a new house about two years ago and I had successfully avoided painting until now by extolling the understated beauty of builder white and then disappearing quickly. But I finally caved on his room. So I told him it looked really good and I couldn't stand the thought that a rotten kid like him would have the nicest room in the house, so I was going to have to paint the other rooms. Thus, I said, he had made his mother very happy, but not necessarily his father.
To which he replied: "Well, Dad, I guess that means I'm doing my job."
