THREE YEARS AND STILL NO BOMBINGS HERE:
Bombings Signal Failures in War on Terror (Juan Cole, Informed Comment)
Three major bombs went off between the Nile and the Indus rivers on Thursday. Do they have anything in common, and what do they tell us about the world that Bush has made?
That the war is occurring where the problems lie instead of in the downtowns of American cities? Posted by Orrin Judd at October 8, 2004 12:51 PM
Precisely.
Posted by: steve-o at October 8, 2004 1:22 PMIt also tells us that "long-running conflict between radical Sunni Muslim groups with al-Qaeda ties and radical Shiite groups aligned with Tehran is heating up". This is a bad thing in what way? If our enemies kill each other, how do we lose?
Posted by: Bob at October 8, 2004 1:24 PMSince 9-11, how many bombings have their been in non-Muslim countries? Aside from the special case of Israel, it's just Spain, isn't it? The closest they can come are areas within Muslim nations popular with non-Muslims like this one, and in Indonesia. We're winning.
Posted by: Timothy at October 8, 2004 1:54 PMLet's hope Kerry or the Dems make this arguement. And Bush's retort is simple - do you want the bombings here instead of there?
Posted by: AWW at October 8, 2004 1:57 PMDon't forget that Spain was mostly Muslim (in the South especially) from the 700s until they were defeated in 1492 by the armies of Ferdinand and Isabella.
Posted by: Bartman at October 8, 2004 2:37 PMWasn't there one in Paris (outside the Indonesian embassy) yesterday? Of course, with France, that may depend on your definition of non-Muslim. Present or future...
Posted by: TimF at October 8, 2004 2:38 PMSomeone on ESPN Radio this morning was saying that a goldfish has a three-second long-term memory. While that may or may not be true, it's only slightly shorter than Juan Cole's long-term memory, since he apparently believes there were never any terrorist bombings in the world prior to George W. Bush's presidency. The fact that none of the most recent bombings have occurred on U.S. soil only adds to the argument against Cole's claims, though Juan has shown over the years that contrary factoids just go into the three-second memory shredder, never to be seen again.
Posted by: John at October 8, 2004 3:25 PMJuan Cole has a vested interest in being a far-left loon. That is how he gets published in the world of far-left loonydom like Counterpunch.
Posted by: Bart at October 8, 2004 3:55 PMGoldfish have a long-term memory.
One of the hosts of the Discovery Channel's fine show MythBusters was able, over the course of a week, to train goldfish to swim a maze.
Therefore, Juan Cole is less intelligent than a goldfish.
