THE UNKINDEST CUT OF ALL:

Connecticut not a battleground, but tighter (Trip Jennings, 10/01/04, Waterbury Republican-American)

If the election were held today, Sen. John Kerry would edge out President Bush in Connecticut by fewer than 10 percentage points.

But don't call Connecticut a battleground state.

Quinnipiac University pollster Douglas Schwartz settled on a less-loaded description Thursday when the second Quinnipiac University poll in as many months showed Kerry beating Bush among likely Connecticut voters, 50 percent to 44 percent.

"It's a healthy lead but it is not an insurmountable lead. Anything can happen in five weeks," Schwartz said, declining to anoint Connecticut as America's newest toss-up state.

There's a substantial number of people in Connecticut who commute by rail to NYC. Wonder how many of them worked at the WTC, or knew someone who did.

I doubt CT will for Bush. The proximity of southestern CT to NYC might be helping Bush. CT only has about 5 EV so Bush's time is probably better spent working on WI, IA, NM, OR, WA, or even MI.

Given the behavior of its GOP governor, this is remarkable.

Bart - unlike the NJ Dem governor the CT GOP governor actually resigned. I think the Lt gov who took his place has a pretty good approval rating for now.

Connecticut's a strange little state populated on the southwest by refugees from New York looking for slightly lower taxes and more pastoral settings. They change their addresses while maintaining their idiosyncratic political tendencies. Lot's of Kerry/Edwards signs along with bumper stickers with sentiments like the one I saw the other day in tony Westport: WAR! (not in my world). How can you argue with that?

When the terrorists strike a school or shopping mall in Westport, those signs will change very fast.
