SO MUCH FOR THE WHISPERING CAMPAIGN:

McAuliffe to College Dems: Bush Will Reinstitute Draft (Robert B. Bluey, October 08, 2004, CNSNews.com)

Republicans had no sooner shot down rumors of a military draft when Democratic Party Chairman Terry McAuliffe warned a group of College Democrats on Friday that President Bush would call them up for duty if re-elected.

"I know it's controversial to say it, but don't think for one second that if George Bush gets re-elected and we have another conflict in some other theater of the world, we're going to have to reinstitute the draft," McAuliffe said. "It is very controversial to say it, but it is what it is."

"but don't think... we're going to have to reinstitute the draft"

I'm assuming he misspoke.

GOP needs to slam the DNC on this. You'd think defeating the bill 402-2 would do it but some people never learn.

GWB did. He said it in as many words in tonight's debate. Kerry kind of floundered in his response.

GWB should also point to Kerry's plan for mandatory service by 18 year-olds. Sounds like a draft to me.

Gee, it's always good to hear from Terry McAuliffe. It's kind of like reading the New York Times. You just know you can count on veracity, and it makes me feel warm and tingly all over.

The funny thing is that if you check out the grammar of the first sentence, 2nd paragraph, you see this: "...but don't think for one second that if GB gets' re-elected...we're going to have to reinstitute the draft. hee hee.. ok, we, er, won't think that. Way to go, Terry.

He's just reaffirming that it's a Democrat objective to reinstate the draft and blame GWB as the reason they have to do so. Well, how dumb do the think these college kids are supposed to be anyway? Never mind.

Posted by: genecis at October 9, 2004 4:14 PM

Genecis - dumb enough that some fair percentage of them are believing it even after Bush's loud and clear statement that there will be no draft. Oh, if they only knew the whole idea in congress was started by Charlie Rangel and another dem!

DL:

I saw a poll today that over half of young people believe it.

So reported in my newspaper.

I nominate this for the strangest political story this country has produced since Ma Ferguson

Not only that, but in defending the thing I've heard a number of dems say that it's not important whether or not Bush will reinstate the draft. What's important is that people are concerned about it. They say that's the big story! Not unlike Dan Rather's logic about his big gaffe. Wow, it's mind boggling.
