MAN VS. MOUSSE:

Pundits: Cheney 'substance' tops Edwards 'style' (Joseph Curl, 10/06/04, THE WASHINGTON TIMES)

The same political pundits who proclaimed Sen. John Kerry the winner of the first presidential debate last night gave the nod to Vice President Dick Cheney, saying he had bested Sen. John Edwards in their debate by clearly illustrating the large stature gap between the two vice-presidential candidates.

"I think Dick Cheney did awfully well in putting John Edwards in his place, saying, 'Well, I've been presiding over the Senate, and I didn't meet you until tonight,' " said NBC's Andrea Mitchell, recalling the vice president's most memorable line of the night.

"Talking about his not being on the job was pretty devastating," she said, referring to Mr. Cheney's repeated hits on Mr. Edwards and Mr. Kerry for missing important Senate votes as they campaigned.

Obviously on an intellectual level it doesn't matter that Kerry Edwards were no-shows in the Senate most of the time--neither of them does much when they are there, after all--but voters hate it.

MORE:
DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS (DICK MORRIS, October 6, 2004, NY Post)

LAST night John Edwards went from seeming to be like JFK to emulating Dan Quayle in the space of 90 minutes. Confronted with Dick Cheney's obvious competence, incisive parries to his charges and devastating rebuttal of his phony statistics, Edwards looked like the proverbial deer in the headlights.

Normally, vice presidential debates are not significant. But this confrontation should serve President Bush well. With Edwards parroting Sen. John Kerry's line in last week's presidential debate, Cheney gave the answers Bush should have offered but failed to articulate.

If the first presidential debate was a contrast of Bush's substance and Kerry's style, the vice-presidential debate gave Cheney a chance to emphasize the president's positions and Kerry's contradictions without tripping over his own words.

Cheney looked like a man and Edwards looked like a boy.

Even folks who are charmed by his looks can't have been comforted by the thought of John Edwards running the country in a crisis.

Apparently the Dems are showing a picture of Cheney and Edwards at a prayer breakfast to dispute Cheney's "never met him" line. I don't think this will work as a) Cheney was clearly refering to while in the Senate doing business, and b) being at the same event doesn't mean they interacted at all.

It appears Bush/Cheney are shifting from the flip-flop label to the too liberal/hasn't done anything label which is probably smart since the flip-flop label has been established.

Cheney was extremely effective last night with the Howard Dean line, the Kerry's weak defense record in the Senate theme , and the Kerry Edwards no-show in the Senate theme.

You know, when I was young and growing up, I remember coming down the steps into the kitchen, early in the morning, and I would see the glow of the television.

Ah, the image of little Johnnie Edwards in his pj's. Take that Al Qaeda!

Posted by: pchuck at October 6, 2004 11:05 AM

Not that it's pertinent, but Andrew "Crazy Pills" Sullivan is calling the exchange on Edwards's attendance record a personal attack. I'm ashamed to admit I even bothered to read him.

AC:

His public voting record is personal?

Posted by: oj at October 6, 2004 11:55 AM

I watched the debate with my girlfriend, who is a native Texan of basically conservative sympathies, a solid Bush voter, but not a politics junkie. Her two comments:

(1) There's something about Edwards's voice that makes him sound like he's gay. Can't say I'd ever noticed, but then I work with lawyers of dubious morals all day every day.

(2) Elizabeth Edwards obviously hasn't had the "political wife makeover" yet.

I'm just happy that people can go for subtance over a pretty face! Yay! Folks were listening. I love Americans. They fall for a lot but on the big things, though they are often silent, they are by no means stupid.

Ditto to AC re A Sullivan. Read him for a long time, but no more.

PS: Are all the moderators liberals? Didn't like Gwen much.

Random Lawyer: Your girlfriend is not alone. Back in North Carolina, I knew all sorts of people -- women, mostly, for whatever it's worth -- who thought Edwards' voice sounds like that of a gay man. I don't always hear it, but I think I know what they're talking about.

While we're on such a frivolous topic, might as well express my bewilderment about the whole "looks" meme. Sure, Edwards is not a bad-looking guy, but how did this whole "killer looks" idea set in? I mean, I can look at any number of males considered to be "good-looking" and recognize why. But Edwards? I don't get it. Since I'm not the expert on the appeal of males, I've asked many women about this, and not one -- on either side of the political aisle -- has expressed particular fondness for Edwards' looks.

So strange that "Edwards' great looks" has taken root as some kind of conventional wisdom.

Fairly devastating title to the post...loved it!

"Ah, the image of little Johnnie Edwards in his pj's."

I wonder how a young Johnnie Edwards felt about Lady Penelope. Pretty aboulic, I'd wager!

AC, I hear ya! I stopped reading Sullivan about 4 months ago. Goodness, he pitches a fit and holds a grudge like a 13 year old.

Posted by: pchuck at October 6, 2004 12:57 PM

[Cue soundtrack from Hart to Hart]:

"Hello. This is my boss, John Edwards, he's a millionaire, self-made. And this is his wife, Mrs. E, she's quite a lady. By the way, my name is Max. I take care of both of them, which ain't easy... 'cause when they met it was murder."

I think you have to consider his competition: other politicians.

You don't need any intellect to be An Intellectual.

Posted by: Ken at October 6, 2004 1:43 PM

So what's wrong with Cheneys' looks? He's the "Big Dog" ... "Big Time!"

Sullivan, an excellent writer, has turned out to be a one issue INO (Republican?). Called himself an "Eagle" I believe. Sad really. Just blowing along with the wind.

No pun intended.

Posted by: genecis at October 6, 2004 1:53 PM

Well, Andrew does think that Cheney is more sexy than Edwards, so we should give him some credit.

But he is moving towards incomprehensibility, in an 'intellectual' sort of way. Kind of like an inverted Bush.

If there's any justice on this Earth, the good Governor just won himself a book.
