Porter Goss' initial moves as CIA director appear to herald a post-election purge at the already troubled spy agency, according to current and former top U.S. intelligence officials.Goss, a former Republican congressman, has put at least four former Capitol Hill Republican staffers into top positions in his CIA office and has given them broad authority to make personnel and restructuring decisions, the current and former intelligence officials said.
One of the aides, whose identity Knight Ridder is not disclosing because he served under cover, has been "going around telling people they are to fire 80 to 90 people" in the Directorate of Operations, the CIA's covert arm, according to a former official.

The CIA is such a waste of money, time, energy and oxygen that we would be better off closing it entirely, splitting its functions between Defense and the FBI.
What has the CIA ever been good at other than smuggling drugs and Nazis into America and the rest of the Free World?
Posted by: Bart at October 23, 2004 2:10 PMIt's not smart politics to tip your hand like this before the elections. The CIA has the ability to cause a lot fo trouble to those it doesn't like, including Goss & Bush. Why give them the incentive just when they can hurt you the most?
Ras - you may be right. Then again this might buck up the conservatives unhappy with Bush over a variety of things.
Also, can we get someone similar to rip apart the State department?
