WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR...
War on Iraq was illegal, says Annan (Alec Russell, The Telegraph, September 16th, 2004)
Kofi Annan, the United Nations secretary general, said last night that the war in Iraq had been "illegal", and "in conformity" with neither the UN Security Council nor the UN Charter.Asked on the BBC World Service if the war was illegal, he replied: "Yes, if you wish."

I doubt Bush will be hanging his head in shame. This, after all, is the organization that's doing absolutely nothing to halt the sudanese genocide, but hey, they're doing it by the book.
Posted by: Dave Sheridan at September 16, 2004 7:06 AMYes, with the price of oil right now on world markets, Kofi and friends no doubt are really missing that Iraqi kickback money. Definitely an outrage worth putting into a formal Security Council resolution.
Posted by: John at September 16, 2004 7:44 AMAnd this announcement adds to the sum of human knowledge...... how?
Posted by: Andrew X at September 16, 2004 8:36 AMLiberating two countries and taking the war to the enemy . . . $200 billion.
Sticking it to the UN . . . priceless.
Posted by: David Cohen at September 16, 2004 9:14 AM"...if you wish"?!?!? What the h311 is that supposed to mean?
Posted by: Roy Jacobsen at September 16, 2004 10:29 AMKofi Annan is a war criminal, complicit in the deaths of probably 1 million people.
Posted by: ratbert at September 16, 2004 11:01 AMOne can only hope that President Bush has a plan for the UN during his second term. I hope it's along the lines of the US dropping out of that festering organization.
Posted by: Tom Wall at September 16, 2004 11:24 AMThe best way to minimize the damage the UN can do is to stay in it.
Posted by: Chris Durnell at September 16, 2004 11:45 AMKofi and Co. had bet the farm that no one would ever step up and bell the cat.
They bet wrong.

Methinks this is Kofi's favorite phrase.
Posted by: Karl at September 16, 2004 2:08 PMKofi was lining his pocket through his son and the Oil for Palaces program. Throw him in the slam and trow away the key.
Posted by: Robert Schwartz at September 16, 2004 2:30 PMWithout the USA there is no UN. We could easily walk away without much changing, aside from the organizational loss of the veneer of practicality and usefullness as a bureaucracy. The UN is the product of the same mentality common to the "idealists' yearning for departments of "peace" and "wellness" to be staffed by like-minded folks accustomed to working as a protected class, insulted from the realities of making a living and paying for benefits such as mandated social insurance schemes.
Does anyone believe the world would be worse off without a United Nations?
Posted by: Tom C, Stamford,Ct. at September 16, 2004 3:35 PMBut -- but every Trekkie KNOWS that the UN is what's going to become -- THE FEDERATION!!!!
(Doo, dee, doo doo doo doo dooooooooooooo...)
