WHAT RANGE--FROM GORE TO KERRY:
Bush, Cheney Spar With Mock Debate Foes (SCOTT LINDLAW, 9/13/04, AP)
President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have been sparring with mock-debate partners since midsummer, getting ready for Democrats John Kerry and John Edwards. In late July, Bush began practicing with Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., inside the White House residence, officials said Monday. Gregg also played Al Gore in debate preparation in 2000.
Cheney started debate rehearsal in early August, jousting with Rep. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican and longtime Bush family friend.
Nice indicator there of how silly the notion is that NH's in play--Mr. Gregg is up for re-election and is playing games instead of campaigning. Posted by Orrin Judd at September 14, 2004 3:31 PM
I'm still glad to see Bush doing debate prep for facing Kerry, even though the senator isin free fall. He looked and sounded unprepared back in 1998 in his debate with Garry Mauro, but had such a huge lead (and held the debate so far away from the rest of the state's population on a high school football Friday night) it didn't matter.
Getting lazy about these debates would be of greater consequence, though I have no doubt that even if every other word out of John Kerry's mounth was "Vietnam" he'd still be given the win on style points by CBS.
Posted by: John at September 14, 2004 3:52 PMHopefully Gregg will remember to get out of Kerry character when he does go back to NH or he might lose. Also, isn't the NH primary soon? Do the GOP officeholders have any serious challengers?

Today and no. Gregg is going to get Granny D and the Governor will get a Democrat who wants to raise taxes.
Posted by: oj at September 14, 2004 4:34 PMOff-topic, but did you hear the piece on NPR yesterday about the milkman (and wife) who deliver in NH? It would just warm Harry's heart to know that milk is still delivered to the door (and they are looking to hire more workers).
Posted by: jim hamlen at September 14, 2004 4:40 PMIs Gregg good at switching positions mid-answer? And did he serve in Vietnam?

The Wife heard it and we too thought of Harry. Plus we have bottled water here for under a dollar.
Posted by: oj at September 14, 2004 5:53 PMBottled water? Isn't the stuff you get out of the well good enough?
Yeah, real men take their water out of a hole in the ground and put their water back into a hole in the ground, though preferably the holes should be seperated by a good distance.
Posted by: David Cohen at September 14, 2004 7:05 PMGood advice, David Cohen. Reminds me of Riders in the Sky admonitions to young cowpokes--
1. Always help your mom around the house.
2. Never squat while wearing spurs.
3. Always drink upstream from the herd.
...and never look straight up at a bird.
