THE AUTHORITARIANS:

Junking Science (NY Times, 9/14/04)

The Bush administration has from time to time found it convenient to distort science to serve political ends. The result is a purposeful confusion of scientific protocols in which "sound science" becomes whatever the administration says it is. In the short run, this is a tactic to override basic environmental protections in favor of industry. In the long run, it undermines the authority of science itself.

authority (Webster's 1913 Dictionary)
Au`thorÂŽi`ty

n. 1. Legal or rightful power; a right to command or to act...

That which the intellectual elites can not win democratically they must try to achieve by other means.

Oh, come on.

Webster's online dictionary:

Main Entry: au·thor·i·ty
Pronunciation: &-'thär-&-tE, o-, -'thor-
Function: noun

2 a : power to influence or command thought, opinion, or behavior b : freedom granted by one in authority :

4 a : GROUNDS, WARRANT b : convincing force

Either way, I could see you making a point in line with your philosophy, and either would be a more honest starting point in considering how the term was meant in that context, and how it is generally understood in similar contexts.

We're supposed to follow the authority of the Church. It would never, ever twist statements to suit shortsighted ends, of course

Bingo! Science, for y'all, is the Church.

Except our church doesn't have heretics

OJ:

Having one's theory demonstrated as incorrect does not make one a heretic. After all, they never had to worry about excommunication.

Or a little party at the Stake & Flame.

They all got to defend themselves. Heretics don't
