HE'S NEVER MET A DEMOCRATIC ASPIRATION HE'D SUPPORT (via Kevin Whited):

Kerry's defense outlook 'alarming' (Sharon Behn, 9/17/04, THE WASHINGTON TIMES)

Taiwan's top official on China said yesterday that Taipei is unnerved by Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's recent statements on China-Taiwan relations.

Comments made by Mr. Kerry on the sensitive issue of Taiwan "were a little bit alarming to us," said Joseph Wu, chairman of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council.

He was particularly concerned by Mr. Kerry's statement during the Democratic primary race that Taiwan might have to accept a one-country/two-system policy similar to that applied to Hong Kong.

It's easy to make fun of his statement but John Kerry was certainly correct when he suggested that many foreign leaders support him. Of course, the ones who don't would be those whose democracies are threatened by totalitarian aggression. He's always been on the wrong side in such cases.

Kerry should have picked Kofi Annan to run with him.

I think his commment about foreign leaders is probably going to be raised in the debates (it offers a two-fer for the press: putting Kerry on the griddle and making Bush queasy regarding why foreign leaders don't like him).

But Kerry's discomfiture will be greater.

I don't know that it'll make Bush queasy; all he has to say is that foreign leaders don't get to decide who will be President of the USA, it's the good, hard-working (take that, France) citizens of America.

If pressed, he can always name a dozen foreign leaders who at least get along with Bush.
