DID HE WAKE WITH A HORSE HEAD?:

Lebanon Captures Top al-Qaida Operative (HUSSEIN DAKROUB, 9/22/04, Associated Press)

Lebanon announced the arrest of the country's top al-Qaida operative and said Wednesday that he and another Lebanese suspect plotted suicide attacks on Western embassies and recruited insurgents to fight in Iraq.

Senior security officials said the two, who were arrested Friday with eight accomplices, also planned to assassinate Western diplomats and attack Lebanese security and judicial targets.

At least one of the suspects allegedly had contact with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian militant whose Tawhid and Jihad group beheaded two American hostages in Iraq this week.

Lebanese officials said the arrests were testimony to its cooperation in the U.S.-led war on terrorism. They thanked Syria - the key power broker in Lebanon - and Italy for their cooperation in breaking up the alleged plot.

Somebody or something would appear to have scared the bejeebies out of Baby Assad.

Bush and the GOP need to be broadcasting this stuff far and wide to defuse Kerry's "Iraq is a quagmire and not part of the WOT" attack line.

All of the recent presidential poll results use Arabic numbers, and Assad can read the handwriting on the video screen.

I suspect someone told him we were about ready to cry havoc and let slip the Israeli dogs of war.

Some speculation:
-Assad is looking at Gaddafi and Hussein and making his choice,
-Iraqi government explained that Iraqi oil could flow through either Syria, Jordan/Israel or Turkey,
-terrorists no longer simply passing through Syria, but also setting up shop and thereby threatening the powers that be.

AWW is correct, that between now and the election Bush needs to pound away at the cooperativeness of Libya and Lebanon and yes even Syria. This is considerably more important to the public than the supposed future "democracy" of Iraq (which is bulls**t anyway).

Kerry is picking up the pace on the the anti-war front and it is important that Bush not let him get momentum. This "attitude adjustment" by Syria, Libya is exactly that which will cut Kerry down to size. He will start to look small and ineffectual compared to the "leadership" of Bush.

Otherwise Bush is leaving himself open to damage by every beheading and car bomb.

I'm going to agree with John - it's not anything specific the USA has done recently, it's the poll numbers. If Assad thinks Bush is going to win strongly it could well change his strategic views.

Babby Assad went to medical school in England. He can read English.
