Black boys betrayed by racist school system, says report (Hugh Muir and Rebecca Smithers, The Guardian, September 7th, 2004)
Black schoolboys have been betrayed by the education authorities for almost half a century and are struggling to overcome racism from many of their own teachers, according to a damning new report out today.Members of an influential education commission say the failure of the schools system and individuals within it to successfully engage with students of African-Caribbean origin has severely hindered them and contributed to massive underachievement. [...]
The 285-page report, which represents the most exhaustive study to date of the educational underachievement of black boys, concludes that: "The English schooling system has produced dismal academic results for a high percentage of black pupils for the best part of 50 years."
Can anyone think of a sentence that sums up everything that is wrong with modern education better than that one?
When is the vast bulk of Blacks going to jettison cultural mores which doom them to being in the underclass forever?
In a nation like the US, where the three highest income ethnic groups are Asian Indians, Jews and Japanese, it is very hard to blame 'Racism' for your group's failings and keep a straight face.
In Britain, there is no shortage of self-made billionaires of Asian or Jewish parentage, hardly a characteristic of a racist society.

If I were still a school boy after 50 years, I'd be pretty mad too. (Probably at myself, though.)

And yet if you look at new US immigrants from Africa, they do about as well as any other immigrants.
Trivia bit: I've read (and believe, from personal experience) that about 50% of parking lot attendants in Boston are Kenyan immigrants. The lot owners love them because they're cheap and honest; the Kenyans like it because it gives them some peace and quiet (compared to the US workplace in general) and a chance to study - while working - for the classes they're invariably taking.
I don't think those Kenyans are a permanent underclass.

The overwhelming majority of Blacks I meet at professional meetings are West Indian or African. Poor performance among Blacks ain't genetic.

It's your headline, which seems to say that the medical profession can't do as much for the obese as they can for the non-obese, (true enough), contrasted with your highlighted passage.
If the same meaning is inferred, then your message is that blacks can't be helped as much as others.
Actually, Michael, the message was that people increasingly look to public and government services as having the primary responsibility to solve their problems irrespective of their own performances, habits, lifestles, initiatives, etc. They do so largely because the liberal elites that run the shop (like this "study") encourage them to believe they are so entitled. It could have been Eastern Europeans, Muslims, East Indians, aboriginals, women, the disabled or a few others and the story would have worked just as well.
