WITH OR AGAINST?:
Howard ire over Bush rift report (BBC, 8/28/04)
Tory leader Michael Howard has hit out at White House aides after he was told he would never meet President Bush. The Sun reported senior aide Karl Rove told Mr Howard in February: "You can forget about meeting the president full stop. Don't bother coming."
The officials were reportedly furious at the Conservative leader's call for Tony Blair to resign over the Iraq war.
Mr. Bush meets regularly with Britain's conservative leader: Tony Blair. Posted by Orrin Judd at August 28, 2004 11:15 AM
That's the price Mr. Howard has to pay for going wobbly on us.
It would be nice for the US GOP and UK Tories to get along but until the UK Tories start acting like friends (i.e. not attacking the war, attacking the EuroZone, etc) there's no reason to meet up.

It's about time we had a President with the cojones to slap back at "friends" who like to slip knives in our back.
Niall Ferguson was writing in the WSJ yesterday, comparing GWB with John Major. He missed the bus on that. John Major bears a big share of the blame for turning the Tories into the weak-sister excuse for a party they are today. Maybe the Conservatives and Labour ought to swap party names.
Posted by: Joe at August 28, 2004 1:13 PMKarl Rove actually said "full stop"?
Posted by: James Haney at August 28, 2004 7:26 PMI'm sorry Orrin, but which conservative Tony Blair are we talking about? His support on the war was welcome and he should be thanked for all time for it but outside of this issue he is no different from any leftist politician.
Posted by: Steve Martinovich at August 28, 2004 7:32 PMHoward was being a lawyer again and speaking out against the war because it suited his "case".

It's much different--reforms like his lifetime savings accounts are inherently conservative.
