Democrats may use assault weapons ban against Bush, GOP (FRANK JAMES, 8/01/04, Chicago Tribune)

When former President Bill Clinton sought to frame differences between Democrats and Republicans in his prime-time convention speech Monday, he made a point of citing the soon-to-expire federal ban on semiautomatic assault weapons.

"Our policy was to put more police on the street and to take assault weapons off the street - and it gave you eight years of declining crime and eight years of declining violence," Clinton said to Democratic cheers. "Their policy is the reverse."

The ex-president's charges demonstrated how some Democrats hope to use the assault weapons issue against President Bush and members of Congress in the campaign.

Nothing contributed more to the GOP lanslide of '94 than the Democrats embrace of gun control.

They can try, but when the #1 guy against the ban says it really doesn't matter, that's all the pubbies have to say.

That and have someone explain what the difference is.

This is so nuts! The so-called assault-weapons ban doesn't ban anything except cosmetic features such as bayonet lugs and flash hiders, and the manufacturers simple make the same guns san bayonet lug and flash hider, and life goes on as it did before. Guns made after the "ban" went into effect are not supposed to be used with high-capacity magazines, but high-capacity mags are generally available, and are interchangeable with the post-ban type.
The bottom line is that nobody who wants an M-16 or AK-47 clone doesn't have one because of the so-called ban. Any reduction in crime has to be due, not to the "ban,' but to demographics and incapacitory incarceration. What did you expect: just remember who it was who went on television, looked us in the eye, waved his finger and told us that the AWB reduced crime.

The congressional Dems aren't going to drive off that cliff again. No matter how much the VPC or Diane Feinstein wants them to. The CDC said the AWB had no effect on crime.

Think again, Pete.

Gun control doesn't play in red states. That's why Gore went out of his way in the '00 debates to emphasize that he did not want to take guns away from hunters and sportsmen. Obviously, internal polling showed that the gun issue was hurting him. It may have cost him the election, given that he was unable to carry West Virginia or Tennessee.
