SO LONG, IT'S BEEN POINTLESS:
Germany to bear brunt of US troop withdrawal (Peter Spiegel, August 15 2004, Financial Times)
Germany will be hit harder than any other country by US President George W. Bush's announcement on Monday that the Pentagon will withdraw 70,000 troops from overseas and return them to US bases, US officials said at the weekend.About 45,000 of the reduction will come in Europe, a majority being culled from the 75,000 US servicemen based in facilities across Germany. The US has been in talks with German officials about its plans for more than a year. It will be the biggest restructuring of US forces overseas since the end of the cold war. The plans include a general briefing in December when most of the overview was presented, according to a senior state department official.
Senior Pentagon officials have emphasised that any reduction is not connected with Germany's opposition to the Iraq war.
We should withdraw our dead from France. Posted by Orrin Judd at August 16, 2004 8:45 AM
Why just 45,000? Take them all out.
Posted by: genecis at August 16, 2004 8:56 AMAs a friend at work has been saying for two years: "Bring our boys home for good." They're getting pissed on every day they have to spend in graves in Europe.
Posted by: Jim Gooding at August 16, 2004 8:58 AMBring home remains of our boys. Cannot sleep in next world if not welcome in eternal resting place. Remember how Muslim undig and mutilate body of slain policeman in Madrid this year. Spanish press pretend it is random vandals. This will happen to all US soldier body one day in Islamic France. Culture do not respect dead is sick culture. My heart uneasy for fate of fallen soldiers in spanking surrender monkey land.
