SHE COULD PROBABLY MARRY HIM IN SF (via Rick Turley):

Albertan ordered to pay ex-wife $200 a month for pet support (CBC, 10 Aug 2004)

For the first time in Canada, a court has ordered a man to give his ex-wife monthly support payments for their dog.

Kenneth Duncan, a truck driver in Edmonton, was told to pay $200 a month in alimony towards the upkeep of Crunchy, a St. Bernard.

Well, it's not as if they have children in Canada anymore.

And there ARE a lot of couples who have a hard time with the difference between their dog and their child.

Some years ago, there was an attempt at trend-setting regarding "DINKs" (double-income, no kids couples). "DINKs live in big four-bedroom McMansions -- one bedroom for themselves, one for their pedigreed dog, one for a home office, and one for a workout machine."

To which I added: "Where are their kids? In the dumpster behind the Womyn's Reproductive Choice Center."

"Where are their kids? In the dumpster behind the Womyn's Reproductive Choice Center."

As a committed childfree woman, I certainly don't have any argument against abortion — believe me, if $DEITY gave me "the gift of motherhood," I'd be at the return counter so fast it'd make your head spin.

But how do you know, Ken, that these same women weren't just using birth control successfully ... or, perhaps, got tubal ligations, or their mates vasectomies?

Oh, that's right.... according to the ghod-botherers, we're all supposed to "go forth and multiply." Even if, like me, we don't particularly like being around kids. Or we aren't monogamous, or we're drug addicts or alcoholics, or we simply are too stupid to tie our own shoes (as seems to be true of many "parents" — breeders, more accurately — I see out there).

The attitude that everyone should start poppin' out sproggen regardless of how fit they are to assume what we are continuously told is the "sacred responsibility of parenthood" doesn't bespeak very much liking for children, in my mind, just a rather rigid attitude toward life. The attitude that everyone should be "following the script," as childfreers refer to it.

Oh, well. I suppose that if Moomie and Duhddie feel overwhelmed, they can always just "forget" little Snotleigh or Kayytlynnnnne in the back of the SUV on a hot summer day. After all, they'll never get prosecuted, because they've "suffered enough."
