I LOVE TO GO APANDERING...:

In campaign game, occasional fumbles: Local flavor gets Kerry cheers, jeers (Glen Johnson, August 5, 2004, Boston Globe)

On Sunday night in Taylor, Mich., Kerry noted that he had just come from Bowling Green but apparently forgot that he had arrived in the state of the Ohio Buckeyes' most bitter rival, the University of Michigan Wolverines. The nickname of the Bowling Green team he had celebrated hours earlier also seemed to escape him.

''We just came from Bowling Green, and I was smart enough not to pick a choice between the Falcons and the, you know . . . all the other teams out there. I just go for Buckeye football, that's where I'm coming out."

As a smattering of boos alerted him to his faux pas, Kerry tried to right his wrong: ''That's while I was in Ohio. Now I'm in the state of Michigan, and your great big 'M' and a powerhouse of a team, and the bottom line is all of us are still waiting for Massachusetts to somehow get in there."

Best not to hold your breath waiting for a representative from MA to get in there.

A constructive chart would be to contrast Kerry's faux pas in the world of sports with his epicurial errors.

In the former, to go along with the University of Michigan/Buckeye foul up, we already have the "Eddie Yost was my favorite player" and the "Manny Ortez" claims involving the Boston Red Sox, while the food category features his manhandling of the hoagie sandwich in Philly during the primary sesason, his Wendy's/Newburgh Yacht Club fiasco last week, and his pizza parlor incident earlier this week from West Virginia, where the senator ordered a tray of pizza and a bag of cheese.

Add Teresa's confusion over what exactly chili is during the Wendy's stop, and I think the food gaffe category has a slight lead over the sports division right now. But there are hundreds of sports teams in the nation and only a limited number of varieties of fast foods Kerry and his entoruage can sample, so I think the athletic division may win out by the end of the election (espeically if the senator is invited back to throw another first pitch at Fenway Park during the playoffs).

He made a pro-Buckeye comment while in Michigan???

We're going to have to invent a new word for this level of ineptness. Suggestions?

I was a student at UM when Bush's dad gave the commencement address. Michigan's campus is as radical as Berkeleys. The Campus paper is left of even today's NYTimes. If he bit the head off a bad live on stage he couldn't have turned the UM students against him, but this might... unless Kerry's media buries the story.
