AN END TO ATLANTICISM:

Bush 'to move 100,000 troops' (Herald Sun, 14aug04)

THE United States is expected to announce today that it is pulling 100,000 troops out of Europe and Asia, according to a British newspaper report.

The Financial Times said the withdrawals - the largest restructuring of Washington's military presence abroad since World War II - would be announced in a speech by US President George W. Bush.

Citing "people briefed on the plan" in a front-page story datelined London, the newspaper said two-thirds of the reductions would be in Europe, with 70,000 troops - mostly from Germany - being sent back to stateside bases.

The diminishment of the Atlantic Alliance, with the recognition that Europe is over, is such a radical transformation that only his opponents tendency to underestimate his ambitions can explain why President Bush's revolutionary nature in this regard is not better understood.

This is long overdue.

To paraphrase Andrew X - "Sweet".
Of course the Dems will portray this as Bush's weak attemtp to bring US soldiers home to prop up the faltering US economy.

Ha.

Ha, ha.

BwahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These guys think they can continue to hate our guts and pull us down at every opportunity without taking any consequences? Let the shrieking begin from the Eurotrash now that we're pulling our troops from their stinking continent. Surely, they've earmarked some piggy-bank money for defense in case of this eventuality?

So the Great Satan is saying bye-bye. No hug?

I am disapointed. I was hoping that we would pull all of our troops out of Korea and Germany. The Germans neither need nor deserve them. The Koreans need them, but they must be punished for their ingratitude.

Proper gratitude would have been volunteering 2 Korean soldiers to serve in Iraq for every American stuck in Korea. They have failed the test. They must be treated accordingly.

And, IIRC, Korea has the Kurds protecting them.

Korea is still a hot area. Europe can be left without much risk.

50000 US troops X $10,000 spending each is approximately 0.25% of German GDP, no trivial sum in a country with near-zero economic growth.

Let's hope this report is correct. Long overdue. Korea may be a hotspot but the Coldwar is over. They can take care of themselves. Get all our troops out of there ASAP. The trip wire concept has become an unecessary immoral abomination.

Oops, dropped a 0 there; it's more like 0.025%. Although $10k is probably a bit low.

Robert Schwartz: I agree with you abou Korea, but on the other hand, when they see this sort of thing is possible they may suddenly start becoming a lot more polite.
Especially now that their excitable neighbors to the north are packing, or soon will be packing, nukes.
