A RARE, EARNEST DEFENSE OF JOHN KERRY

Anti-Kerry Vietnam Veterans Hold Strong (Human Events Online, 8/6/04)

"Captain George Elliott describes an article appearing in today’s edition of the Boston Globe by Mike Kranish as extremely inaccurate and highly misstating his actual views. He reaffirms his statement in the current advertisement paid for by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, Captain Elliott reaffirms his affidavit in support of that advertisement, and he reaffirms his request that the ad be played. [See both affidavits below.]

“Additional documentation will follow. The article by Mr. Kranish is particularly surprising given page 102 of Mr. Kranish’s own book quoting John Kerry as acknowledging that he killed a single, wounded, fleeing Viet Cong soldier whom he was afraid would turn around.

There is nothing morally, ethically or militarily wrong with shooting an armed enemy soldier in the back as he runs from battle, even if he is a wounded teenager. Republicans and conservatives should not suggest that there is (although it is admittedly a little wierd to get a silver star for it). Rather, we should use this opportunity to try to get the left to be realistic about the demands and consequences of fighting a war.

It's no weirder to get a Silver Star for shooting an enemy soldier in the back, than it is to award a Silver Star to an Army Colonel for flying over a battlefield in a helicopter.
Not getting shot down, or shooting something, but just flying overhead.

I typed up such an award for an officer in the 1st Infantry Division in '91.
