TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE
Nuclear arms reportedly found in Iraq (UPI, 7/21/04)
Iraqi security reportedly discovered three missiles carrying nuclear heads concealed in a concrete trench northwest of Baghdad, official sources said Wednesday.Think about your first reaction to this news, and then tell me that domestic politics hasn't screwed everything up.

Great news if it proves out.
Posted by: Michael Herdegen at July 21, 2004 10:02 AMI don't believe in conspiracy theories but if your a Dem you've got be shaking your head - Wilson implodes, Berger scandal, and now (if true) this right around the Dem convention. All we need is Osama captured next week and the Dems will be in full conspiracy mode.
Agree with Michael - finding and getting rid of this stuff is more important in the long run than the domestic politics.
Iraqi and US authorities are denying it. Drudge has it up.

Another point is that this is what, the 12th time WMDs were claimed to be found only to be denied by the US and others? This report seems 2nd or 3rd hand but unless someone is completely making stuff up there must be something going on.
PJ - agree but anything that makes the Dems and media look foolish and helps Bush is needed.
David:
Good point. I first saw this on FreeRepublic, and every other post was, "Oh please, dear God, let it be true!"
Don't get me wrong, I want the hope of finding large stockpiles kept alive until November. Then I'd like us to eventually find out that, despite Saddam's best efforts, he was a miserable failure at acquiring WMDs. Better intelligence capabilities would be nice, but it will always be a crapshoot. It would be more comforting to know that WMDs are much harder to get than we thought.
DEBKA? I would have thought we were all above that here.
Tom, I'd not be much comforted to find that making a n atomic bomb in your basement is hard to do.
No question, the easiest way to get one is to take over a government that has one, and if I were the late Osama bin Laden, I'd have gone after Pakistan.
Sometimes, as we learned under Reagan, it's easier just to steal the whole bank than to try to pilfer a little change out of the till.

The easiest way is to have the French build you a nuclear reactor capable of producing weapons-grade plutonium. Or rather it would be, if not for the Israeli Air Force.
Merely owning plutonium doesn't get the job done.
When we built our first bombs, one of the trickiest parts was figuring out how to machine beryllium.
Terrorists can hire experts, but it's still probably easier just to stage a coup.
Posted by: Harry Eagar at July 21, 2004 4:32 PMBeryllium is nice to have, but not necessary for a workable (albeit degraded yield) bomb. If I had a 'lot' of fissile material, and wanted a working bomb in a hurry, well...
