MY BUT YOUR POWDER'S DRY:
Bush Planning August Attack Against Kerry (ADAM NAGOURNEY and ROBIN TONER, 8/01/04, NY Times)
President Bush's campaign plans to use the normally quiet month of August for a vigorous drive to undercut John Kerry by turning attention away from his record in Vietnam to what they described as an undistinguished and left-leaning record in the Senate.Mr. Bush's advisers plan to cap the month at the Republican convention in New York, which they said would feature Mr. Kerry as an object of humor and calculated derision.
Two themes return here: first, the truly unique and quite daring attempt to make the Senator a laughingstock; second, the discipline they've shown by waiting until August to even begin the campaign. Posted by Orrin Judd at July 31, 2004 10:11 PM
I would anticipate, or at least hope, to see lots of Bush ads during the Olympics. Seems like that event would have relatively high viewership, reach a fairly broad demographic, plus have the added bonus of playing on patriotic and nationalistic sentiments generated during the games.

Posted by: oj at July 31, 2004 11:37 PMKerry should be a laughingstock. The Democrats were nuts for making him their candidate.
Didn't they even bother to ask themselves what people would think about a man who touts his 4 months of military service 30 years ago, but doesn't mention his accomplishments in the last 10 ot 20 years?
Somebody better be watching them or why else would NBC shell out megabucks for them? Besides it'll be fun this year to root against the French and Germans, and to see how competent the Greeks are in staging the whole thing.

I can answer the last question right now: Not very.
One interesting thing about building, (or attempting to build), a massive sports complex in Greece was that they kept digging up items and even entire villages of archeological interest.

A baseball nut and bicycling(!) fan denigrating the Olympics ?
The irony's so intense I have to squint to read the blog.
Kerry as an object of derision at the convention? The smartest thing the Republicans could do is to show that ever-popular Jib-Jab cartoon at the convention.
Posted by: Timothy at August 2, 2004 12:24 PMDubya Bush was not only a party animal in his Yalie days, he was also a master poker player.
One of the winning strategies in poker is to play down your hand as weaker than it is so your opponent underestimates you, let him up the ante with that overconfidence, then you drop the Royal Flush in his face and rake in the chips.
There's also the courtroom strategy of making the main appeal in the closing arguments, when it will be freshest in the jury's mind.
Every indicator is that Bush is going to let Kerry fire off his ammo in August, then come out swinging in September, using the GOP convention as a kickoff.
