HE'S GONE:
45% say Kerry should quit seat, poll indicates (Brian Mooney, July 24, 2004, Boston Globe)
The Republican National Committee yesterday released a poll it commissioned that says nearly half of Massachusetts voters believe John F. Kerry should resign from the Senate as he runs for president.Posted by Orrin Judd at July 24, 2004 8:26 AMIn a survey of 500 Bay State voters conducted last Sunday and Monday, 59 percent said they ''are concerned" that Kerry ''missed 70 percent of the votes in the Senate over the last two years" and 45 percent say he should resign his Senate seat, according to an RNC spokeswoman, Christine Iverson.
I find it hard to believe 45% of Taxachusettsians would even notice the difference if he resigned.

Posted by: NKR at July 24, 2004 2:13 PMHaven't we argued that if Kerry resigns it prevents the GOP from forcing him into tough votes (or skipping them like the FMA)? And now that the MA Dems will prevent Romney from naming an interim GOP replacement and it is no sure thing that the GOP would pick up this seat I'd rather have Kerry stay in and get criticized.

Posted by: AML at July 24, 2004 10:02 PMLike AC, I very much doubt the results of this poll.
Of course many people, if asked whether they're concerned that Kerry has been absent 70% of the time, will respond affirmatively.
Ask them an open ended question like: "How often has Kerry missed Senate votes, and is it a problem ?", and you'll get blank stares.
