GREEN, WHITE, BLACK, RED...:
Nader angers CBC with demand for apology (Hans Nichols and Peter Savodnik, 7/14/04, The Hill)
Tensions between Ralph Nader and the Congressional Black Caucus flared again yesterday, after a letter from the independent presidential candidate to the caucus chairman, Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), demanded an apology for an “obscene racial epitaph” at a tense meeting last month.Black lawmakers reacted to Nader’s letter with a combination of anger and disdain, questioning his mental health and accusing him of acute and advanced egomania.
“He ain’t playing with a full deck,” said Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), a member of the caucus and vice chairman of the Democratic caucus.
“I don’t think he gets it,” said Rep. Albert Wynn (D-Md.). [...]
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) said, “If he didn’t understand what the meeting was about, not only is he an egotistical maniac, he’s dumber than I thought he was.”
Nader’s two-and-a-half-page letter, released to the media before many members of the caucus had a chance to see it, demanded an apology from Rep. Melvin Watt (D-N.C.). Nader took umbrage at Watt’s choice of words. Watt, Nader alleged, called him “just another arrogant white man, telling us what we can do. It’s all about your ego, another [expletive] arrogant white man.”
“Exclamations at the meeting descended into vituperative (e.g., Congresswoman [Carolyn] Kilpatrick’s [D-Mich.] tawdry, anatomical comment yelled loud enough so the press could hear it outside) and ending with the obscene racist epithet repeated twice by Yale Law School alumnus Congressman Melvin Watt of North Carolina,” Nader wrote Cummings.
As reported by The Hill, Kilpatrick told Nader to “get your ass out” at the June 22 meeting.
...aren't those the colors of the Palestinian flag? No wonder they get along like rival terror cliques. Posted by Orrin Judd at July 14, 2004 8:26 PM
Nader firing up the African American base for Kerry?
Posted by: AWW at July 14, 2004 8:33 PMNot surprising, really. The whole Green movement is a "soccer mom", white-based cause that is very unconfortable with sweaty workers or minorities who aren't concerned enough about global warming.
Posted by: Peter B at July 14, 2004 8:56 PMMr. Judd;
So, is Meeks saying that the meeting was about profanity? Sounds like a Kerry fund raiser - no wonder Nader was upset.
Posted by: Annoying Old Guy at July 14, 2004 8:58 PMAOG - agreed. How dare Nader get upset at being cursed and ridiculed by the CBC.
Posted by: AWW at July 14, 2004 10:33 PMExtreme racial epitaph? Is that really what Nader wrote in his letter?
Posted by: NKR at July 14, 2004 11:04 PMMr. Nader hasn't learned his lesson as well as Joe Lieberman. When you enter a presidential campaign, and the CBC takes you to the woodshed for a spanking, the proper response is "Yes, sir, and may I have another, sir."
Posted by: Fred Jacobsen (San Fran) at July 14, 2004 11:55 PMThirty-seven years of unquestioned adulation by the mainstream press helped boost Nader's ego to the point that he believes with absolute certainty in his cause, which in no small part is about the aggrandizement of Ralph Nader.
However, his self-importance has made him blind to the fact that the press and others on the Democratic left began losing their taste for him four years ago, when he ran to the left of Gore and then when he was blamed for the Florida defeat (well, blamed when the Democrats weren't howling about Bush's theft of the election). Now he's running again, and with the closeness of the polls and with no candidate running to Bush's right with any name recognition at all, Democrats like those on the CBC can picture a repeat of 2000 and are getting angrier and angrier at Ralph over his refusal to bow out of the race.
But, of course, if he does take the hint and drops out before the end of October, he'll be a patron saint of the American left once again.
Posted by: John at July 15, 2004 12:20 AMI think the CBC is just jealous because Nader is less marginalized than they are.
Posted by: jim hamlen at July 15, 2004 10:18 AMThank heavens Bush isn't going to speak at the NAACP convention. That would be nothing but a losing proposition. Too bad it has to be that way. When Nfume(SP.) was in Congress I was impressed by his realistic objectivity. No more. Now Cosby is left carrying the real cross for Americans of African Descent. I hope a majority get Cosby's message and strive to become a part of the American community, so those who have may go on with their lives without the pain of embarrassment for those intent on holding themselves apart from fear they can't compete and are enthralled by the self interested demagogues, including the Democrat Party.
Posted by: genecis at July 15, 2004 10:54 AMI don't think this is about Nader's ego. He really believes what he says, and sees no important difference to either party when it comes to meeting his causes.
Posted by: Chris Durnell at July 15, 2004 11:35 AMChris --
I don't doubt Nader believes in his causes. It's just that 37 years of adulation has built up his ego enough to think both that Ralph Nader is the only one who can fix the nation's problems, as outlined by Ralph Nader, and also that there's a bigger gap ideologically between him and John Kerry than between Kerry and Bush.
