THE GODLESS PARTY FIGHTS BACK (via Christianity Today: Weblog):
The Anti-Slackers: Young Christians are pushing the edges of faith. Here's a glimpse into the hearts and dreams of a few of them, in their own words. (Sojourners, March 2002)
Mara Louise Vanderslice, Outreach coordinator, Jubilee USA Network [...]"I was raised as a Unitarian Universalist; I'm really grateful for the openness that tradition gave me. When I later learned about Jesus..."
What that quote says about Unitarianism is funny enough, but it gets better: Ms Vanderslice is now John Kerry's religious outreach director. Posted by Orrin Judd at June 23, 2004 2:31 PM
Instead of anti-slacker, this should be entitled 'anti-faith'. It is not belief at all, or, as Chesterton said, "When man ceases to believe in God, it is not that he then believes nothing, but that he will believe anything".
Pushing the edges of faith - what exactly does that mean?

It means tricking yourself into believing God wants you to do whatever you want.
Posted by: Peter B at June 23, 2004 3:05 PMThough to be fair to Kerry news reports have said that Kerry's camp have "sidelined" Vanderslice and gagged her:

Incedentally, didn't Dean have a Unitarian as his religion advisor?
Reminds me of a joke made by Garrison Kellior about all the cable channels he had. "Theres a Unitarian channel, and a fishing channel, which is almost the same as a Unitarian channel, actually"
Posted by: Jason Johnson at June 23, 2004 3:16 PMThe Universalist Church no longer exists except as a hyphenated nod by the Unitarian Church which assimilated the Universalist Church in a Borg like hostile take-over.
A Universalist minister once told me that the difference between the two sects was that Universalists believed that God was too good to damn men while the Unitarians believed that man was too good to be damned.
It is the Unitarians that gag when they try to say "Jesus".
Posted by: Uncle Bill at June 23, 2004 4:06 PM"I am the very model of a modern Unitarian,
Far broader than a Catholic, Hindu, Jew or Presbyterian.
I know the world's religions and can trace their roots historical
From Moses up to Channing, all in order categorical.
I'm very well acquainted, too, with theories theological,
On existential questions I am always wholly logical,
About most any problem I am teeming with a lot of views,
I'm full of fine ideas that should fill our church's empty pews."
Well, one of the most pernicious lies of our time is this: "God just wants me to be happy".
