TANCREDO SYNDROME STRIKES:

'Made in Mexico' uniforms chafe Border Patrol agents (Billy House, Jun. 11, 2004, Arizone Republic)

It seems an odd fit: U.S. Border Patrol uniforms with labels that say, "Made in Mexico."

Some agents are irate and said they are amazed and embarrassed to find that their new orders for green shirts and trousers - and maybe other uniform items - are being filled with articles of clothing manufactured south of the border.
It is an ironic twist, they said, for the agency whose job it is to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border.

Yet not one of them was angry enough to quit his job and go work in a sweatshop so that the labels would say "Made in USA"...

The question is - would Tom Tancredo?

"Tancredo Syndrome?"

What does that mean?

Brandon:

Loathing but depending on illegal alien labor to maintain your lifestyle:

It's true: Americans do not know what the word "irony" means.

It is, though, almost ironic that the Border Patrol is complaining about legal Mexican labor in Mexico and doesn't understand that keeping Mexicans gainfully employed in Mexico is the only way they can succeed in their mission.

And the fact that you choose to live in New Hampshire and publish this blog in english could be labeled the Judd Syndrome?

David Cohen:

Exactly.

Nice bit about "Governor" Davis in the thread up a bit, BTW.

Why is it if someone doesn't like something about Mexico labor it's now called Tancredo Syndrome? Can you say "asinine" comment?? While it may be a bit of an overboard reaction, I can honestly say I appreciate their dedication to the U.S. worker system. I find it disappointingly amusing to read some comments about buying them anyway to keep the labor in Mexico and not here.

While that may seem nice, it's up to Mexico to find jobs for their people, not to let them cross the border and become the responsibility of another country. I agree the Mexican economy needs to improve but it's not up to the U.S. to make that happen. Funny... if the United States doesn't do something, it's the wrong thing to do, but if the U.S. does do something, it's still wrong. The Mexican government needs to end corruption and actually make things work instead of continuing with the system in place now.

The "sweatshop" reference is pathetic! It's what one might call a clothing manufacturing plant in America if an employee's paid five bucks a day. Ignorance needs to be overcome with the understanding... knowing the facts, that in other countries the pay for labor is on a different scale than here in the United States. Some people need to remember that pay rates in many societies, across the board, are lower than what America has. It's why Mexican labor comes north. Take a low paying job in America and it's high paying compared to many jobs in Mexico, and that's not only the way it is, but something that needs to be understood by those who just don't have a grasp of reality!

Billy, go get that shirt that says, "Made in Mexico" if you want. And when your shirt shrinks while mine, made here in the U.S., retains it's characteristics don't whine when your inferior fabric that you paid less for doesn't measure up anywhere close to the stuff I have on. You get what you pay for!

Chris:

Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.

All of my clothing was assembled, and some of the fabric was manufactured, in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Pakistan, India, and Asia.
It's all very inexpensive.

I've never had any problems with shrinkage or poor quality.

Chris:

No one expects you to understand it, but if you're going to whine about cheap labor then pay more more for domestic, no?

"No one expects you to understand it, but if you're going to whine about cheap labor then pay more more for domestic, no?"

What cheap labor? If you mean illegals in this country, once the costs are all factored in(higher taxes, insurance, etc),it's not that cheap at all.

HOW TO SOLVE THE ILLEGAL ALIEN PROBLEM.

It is simple. We don't need more laws.

Make every legal American a deputy and place a bounty on illegals.

If an American catches an illegal alien pay them anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 of what it costs the Border Patrol to apprehend an illegal.

The closer to the border you catch the illegal alien the more money you make. Catching an illegal within 10 miles of the border should net a bonus! This would benefit the property owners near the border who have had their property destroyed by illegals.

Of course, police would be eligible too! So a routine traffic stop just might earn them some extra spending money.

I would wager the problem with illegal crossings just about ceases the minute the policy is put into place.

The problem isn't the illegals.
