MICHAEL MOORE'S MINUTEMEN HARD AT WORK

16 Afghans Slain by Taliban for Carrying Voter Cards (Reuters, New York Times, June 27th, 2004)

Taliban guerrillas kidnapped and then killed 16 people in an Afghan province after finding them with voter registration cards for the country's September elections, a district official said Sunday.

The guerrillas stopped a bus carrying 17 civilians through the district Friday, said Haji Obaidullah, chief of Khas Uruzgan district in the central province of Uruzgan.

The guerrillas took the passengers to the neighboring province of Zabul and killed all but one of them when they found they were carrying voter cards, he quoted the lone survivor as saying.

"They were apparently killed because they were carrying the registration cards,'' he said.

The greatest obscenity is not Moore or his film. It is that so many presumably decent, if confused, types accord him such respect during a week of beheadings and this kind of atrocity. Is it possible to win the war on terror while losing the war of outrage over terrorism?

Moore, though, has a lot to answer for.

If there is any sense of justice---or barring justice, of shame---he will get what he deserves.

Yes. That't the way Vietnam was lost.

OJ, what Moore is showing us is that we must turn the outrage inward. That is how the modern leftist cleanses his soul, by taking the sins of the world upon himself. Well, not really himself, but the dumb yahoos that he shares the country with. This is largely about class warfare within the US. Moore represents the would-be cultural betters of this country, who are outraged that they have lost control to cowboys and working slobs (those working slobs that are not represented by unions, that is).

It's always dangerous to practice psychiatry without a license, and particularly billiard ball, cause and effect psychiatry. Isn't it obvious, though, that what the left finds comforting in its delusions is that they put us in control? If we just took a few easy steps (which they want us to do anyway) no one would hate us and so no one would attack us.

In a perverse way, the left's ability to dismiss the terrorist threat is actually a tribute to Bush's success over the last 33 months in keeping terrorist attacks away from U.S. shores. It makes them feel safe enough to downgrade the threat to a mere political issue that they don't have to worry about now, but can think about taking up after November, when (they hope) Kerry is elected.
