INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, THE POST RAN THE DREAD WORD IN ITS ENTIRETY:

Cheney Dismisses Critic With Obscenity (Helen Dewar and Dana Milbank, June 25, 2004, Washington Post)

A brief argument between Vice President Cheney and a senior Democratic senator led Cheney to utter a big-time obscenity on the Senate floor this week.

On Tuesday, Cheney, serving in his role as president of the Senate, appeared in the chamber for a photo session. A chance meeting with Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (Vt.), the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, became an argument about Cheney's ties to Halliburton Co., an international energy services corporation, and President Bush's judicial nominees. The exchange ended when Cheney offered some crass advice.

"F[***] yourself," said the man who is a heartbeat from the presidency. [...]

As it happens, the exchange occurred on the same day the Senate passed legislation described as the "Defense of Decency Act" by 99 to 1.

Shouldn't that be: F*** yourself, Leaky?

oj,

Any consideration given to this being a "Clymer moment". I Just don't see Dick Cheney getting that mad. If it was a "Clymer moment" then Leahey should take a good look at the NYT slide since Bush and Cheney's elevation of Clymer (and by extension, the NYT) to "big time" status.

I ahve only ont thing to say: F*** you Sen. Patrick J. Leahy. You are a disgrace to the U.S. Senate.

This is very upsetting to me, since I had hoped that Republicans would attempt to bring good manners, gentlemanly behavior to our national politics. I expect a higher standard to be set by conservatives.

And if anyone at this blog disagrees with me, well then f*** off.

It's very disappointing, Cheney lost his poise, which is what the left counts on. This just started Bush and Rove looking for a replacement.

His health problems must be weighing on his mind. I hope he's not forced to drop off the ticket.

By the way, who was on the short end of the 99-1 vote on the Defence of Decency Act.

Posted by: h-man at June 25, 2004 8:01 AM

Bah. He said what needed to be said to a typical LLL. Bravo to Cheney for calling a spade a spade.

Saying F*** anything is somehow more demoralizing to this country than lets say, mouth humping in the oval office? Go figure.

Now if we can just get Orrin Hatch to drop a few F-bombs on him. Having sat in on a number of Judiciary Committee hearings, I find Hatch's "leadership" pathetic; Leahy and Kennedy run roughshod over him. What exactly about "Senate Picture Day" connotated
"Halliburton Ties Oversight Hearing" to that clod?

Whoever was the 1, it's far more remarkable that JOHN KERRY VOTED!!!!!!!

The reason the Democrats are even able to hold on
to anything is that they have a few Bulldogs like Leahy. It is likely that he baited Cheney. This is no big deal for the base which is largely comprised of angry white men that occasionally say "Go F....".

Posted by: J.H. at June 25, 2004 10:25 AM

The truth is the Republicans need fewer
wuss's like hatch and more enforcers like
Leahy.

Posted by: J.H. at June 25, 2004 10:28 AM

Can't be f-bombing opponents on the Senate floor. Someone needs to be an adult.

Posted by: oj at June 25, 2004 10:31 AM

Had I been there, I would have done the same. Lahey is more than I could bear.

O.J.,

It would have been even better if it came to
blows. False manners and collegiality are
bad for the republic.

Sometimes, nothing is more appropriate than that a good old fashioned Anglo-Saxon curse word. If the situation calls for it, use it.

One should note that this type of usage, is completely different from John Kerry's "Rolling Stone" interview, where the word was used in a premeditated way in order to bolster Kerry's street cred.

The media will harp on this and Cheney will probably be forced to issue an apology. If so he should basically say he was sorry for cursing at a highly partisan senator who used a portrait event to attack him and who has a history of leaking classified information to the public.

J.H.:

To the contrary, all manners and collegiality are false--it is man at his best.

Posted by: oj at June 25, 2004 1:24 PM

OJ: I am with JH on this one. Cheney should revive the old Senatorial custom of caning.

Posted by: Robert Schwartz at June 25, 2004 5:24 PM

this whole "story" and any discussion of it is insane.

HD:

Gotta disagree. I've never seen a logical, artistic or semantical imperative that made that word the best choice, especially not in public life. It's alwys the lazy, \ignorant alternative. And the boring one.
